I've never been a member of the Y, but I've worked out in several across the country.  There's definitely no "standard" among the Y's.  Some are really nice and others are dumps.  Some free-weight areas are lame and others are respectably hardcore.

I used to train at the Y in Hawaii.  the one on Atkinson is actually very nice and I set up the gym area.  The Nuuanu Y is pretty nice too.  Tommy Kono teaches Olympic lifting there.  Back in the 70's the Y in San Pedro was supposed to be one of the equipment gyms anywhere in So. Cal.  I never seen it.  The Y I went to had racquetball, basketball, pool and everything else a Y has.  The weight room was really nice with plenty of weights and equipment.  It got really busy during prime time.  Plus, what was funny is when I was building my gym on Oahu no other gym in Honolulu would let me train there.  They knew I was going to destroy them.
