Record U.S. Arms Deal With Saudis Advances
« on: September 13, 2010, 01:11:19 PM »
I can't believe this deal is still being pushed. Washington (Obama) has officially lost its mind!

Record U.S. Arms Deal With Saudis Advances
Sept 13, 2010 The Wall Street Journal

The Obama administration is set to notify Congress of plans to offer advanced aircraft
to Saudi Arabia worth up to $60 billion, the largest U.S. arms deal ever, and is in talks with the kingdom about potential naval and missile-defense upgrades that could be worth tens of billions of dollars more.

The administration plans to tout the $60 billion package as a major job creator—supporting at least 75,000 jobs, according to company estimates—and sees the sale of advanced fighter jets and military helicopters to key Middle Eastern ally Riyadh as part of a broader policy aimed at shoring up Arab allies against Iran.

The talks between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia have been widely known for months, but many new details are only now coming into focus. These include the number and type of aircraft involved, how much the Saudis intend to spend in an initial installment, and the ongoing negotiations to also upgrade the kingdom's navy and missile defenses.

The $60 billion in fighter jets and helicopters is the top-line amount requested by the Saudis, even though the kingdom is likely to commit initially to buying only about half that amount.

In a notification to Congress, expected to be submitted this week or next, the administration will authorize the Saudis to buy as many as 84 new F-15 fighters, upgrade 70 more, and purchase three types of helicopters—70 Apaches, 72 Black Hawks and 36 Little Birds, officials said.

The notification triggers a congressional review. Lawmakers could push for changes or seek to impose conditions, and potentially block the deal, though that is not expected.

On top of the $60 billion package of fighter jets and helicopters, U.S. officials are discussing a potential $30 billion package to upgrade Saudi Arabia's naval forces. An official described these as "discreet, bilateral conversations" in which no agreement has yet been reached. That deal could include littoral combat ships, surface vessels intended for operations close to shore, the official said.

Saudis are nuclear allies in the region and vital trading partners.  We're equipping them against Russia, iran, China, and other potential enemies.  And they're buying this equipment from US firms, in $USD.

I can imagine... if Obama had slashed 60 billion in military sales to an ally... and they had went to china and put that many chinese workers to work... we'd be hearing about how this "POFS Admin betrays america once again".

We're getting paid to keep our allies safe.  What's the prob here?

oh good point... I thought they did... wiki says they dont... in that case - being our ally and major oil supplier - giving them conventional technology is even more imperative.

I'm a liberal bitch who only voted for dubya twice.... but I see nothing wrong with making $USD for 60 bil in arms sales... more jobs for american workers!!!

Try oil supplier. They're right there with the Iranians for biggest terrorist-financing states. Talk about taking the lesser or two evils.

I guess that's $60 billion less they have to use for building victory mosques all over the world, though.

we buy about 1 to 2 mil barrels of oil per day from them.

we use 15 to 20 million barrels of oil per day.

is everyone okay with $ gas going up a buck a gallon?

And, what do you have against our US manufacturers making a sale?  They're paying taxes.  They're buying in USD, keeping it relevant.

And seriously... if Obama slashed US defense production by 60 bil and put 3000 people out of work... holy shit, they're be a thread bitching about that ;)

I'm not bitching about it. In-fact, I'm fine with it as the Saudi military would never get uppity with us. But acting like the Saudis are "allies" in any sense beyond having us backing them keeps them as the big dog in the Muslim world is stupid to think. Wealthy Saudis financing terrorism is a serious problem, though.

Should we be surprised they love us? Saudi Arabia and the USA >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Iran/Russia.

Funny that you're complaining about this when you had no qualms with Obama putting thousands out of work with his drilling moratorium. Even funnier considering he's now financing off-shore drilling in Brazil and Mexico (and none of that oil we'll see).

Where did I complain?  LOL... i said it's a good idea and good for USD.

Yes, I have a major problem with MFers drilling holes they can't plug up for 100 days.  Yeah, I'm just not cool with that.  Sorry.  Deep water drilling sucks.  Learn to make solar or wind or coal or natty gas or whatever work.  Cause "wind power" never leaks a million barrels into the gulf and kills tourism in my town.

I worded that poorly. I meant you would complain (put whatever word you want there) about this putting 3,000 people out of work yet you had no problem with Obama putting thousands out of work.

But you have no problem with Obama financing deep-water drilling in Brazil and Mexico? That makes no sense.

oh - because IMO, the amount of ppl put out of work by oil leak > those put outta work by ban on deep water drilling.

maybe I'm wrong.  And I could care less if we deep drill in brazil.  You fck up their coastlines, so be it.  But I KNOW many ppl iin FL who lost their job thanks to the BP spill.  Go drill elsewhere, I could care less.

Arnold what bothers you about this deal?

Because they are one of the front runners in producing terror, we're assisting their way of life. Sure, they sell us oil but only to fuel their insanity.

Also, it's no secret that the Saudis are no true friend to Israel, a country which is truly in our corner...for now anyway until the white house pisses them off beyond belief.

Last point, the fact that we buy oil from them pisses me off. I would gladly pay more for my gas if we didn't buy oil from them. Even though all of us with half a brain know there's no real need for us to pay more than ten cents a gallon for gas being as we could so easily be self-sufficient.

Thanks.  Reasonable perspective.  I'm not sure what I think about this yet.

Are you hoping for a reasonable conversation on this? I think it's doubtful...many here cannot even understand the basic concept of rights and their foundation and principles by which they are upheld and forfeited, plus, many here view the mighty Arabians as beacons of insight and intelligence who only want us to get along and rub each others sacks...that makes this a hard conversation to have...it would take bringing in people who see and live in reality.

Critics Slam Obama Administration for 'Hiding' Massive Saudi Arms Deal (Largest Ever)
ABC News ^ | 11/19/10

The Obama administration has quietly forged ahead with its proposal to sell $60 billion worth of fighter jets and attack helicopters to Saudi Arabia unhampered by Congress, despite questions raised in legislative inquiries and in an internal congressional report about the wisdom of the deal.

The massive arms deal would be the single largest sale of weapons to a foreign nation in the history of the U.S., outfitting Saudi Arabia with a fully modernized, potent new air force.

"Our six-decade-long security relationship with Saudi Arabia is a primary security pillar in the region," Defense Sec. Robert M. Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton wrote in a Nov. 16 letter to congress. "This package continues that tradition."

But some critics are questioning the deal, and the stealthy effort by the Obama administration to avoid a more probing congressional review by notifying Congress last month, just as members were headed home for the November elections. Congress had 30 days to raise objections -- a review period that concludes Saturday. With most members leaving Washington today, any significant effort to block the deal appears dead for now, officials said.

"I do not think there will be any action" to hold up the sale, Rep. Howard Berman, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Bloomberg News Thursday.
