Avodart (dutasteride)
« on: November 26, 2010, 07:19:20 PM »
anyone tried this for hairloss?  supposed to be more effective than finasteride (proscar, propecia).  Also could result in higher T levels due to prevention of conversion into DHT.  You guys see any strength, muscle gains on it?

here is the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutasteride

Quote
While dutasteride is only officially approved to treat enlargement of the prostate gland (at a dose of 0.5 mg/day),[3] phase I and II clinical trials for dutasteride as a hair loss drug were also undertaken, but called off in late 2002. The reason the trials were called off is not publicly known. Industry sources speculate that Avodart would have been seen as too similar to Propecia (1 mg/day finasteride) to have proven itself profitable on the market as a hair loss treatment. However, phase II results indicated that dutasteride at both 0.5 mg and 2.5 mg/day generated a superior hair count to finasteride 5 mg at 12 and 24 weeks.[4]
In a test area at 24 weeks, results showed:[5]
Placebo: - 32.3 hairs
Finasteride 5 mg: + 75.6 hairs
Dutasteride 0.1 mg: + 78.5 hairs
Dutasteride 0.5 mg: + 94.6 hairs
Dutasteride 2.5 mg: + 109.6 hairs

I've heard that 8% of men on finasteride experience dick dysfunction, some even after stopping the drug  :o, and the number is higher on dutasteride.  (No source, just going by memory.)  Too risky imo.  I like my penis functional.

I researched propecia for hairloss but was scared off.

If you are a young guy with no E.D. you should be fine.  If you are in your 60s and already having some trouble getting it up, steer clear.

Again, I have no source but there's no reason to think that crushing dht levels wouldn't cause trouble in sexually healthy men, especially since men with low dht related ED wouldn't be taking the drug to begin with.

I decided to just let the hair go.  Do as you will, SS.

why though, you know that there is no permanent effect.  you could try it and you had ed symptoms just stop taking it.  finasteride has no significant half-life so any symptoms would stop with termination of treatment.  avodart does have a half life though.

Someone here linked me to propeciahelp.com a couple years ago.  Some pretty scary stories.  That, together with not being able to find sufficiently convincing evidence to the contrary and an unsettling used car salesman vibe from the hair clinics I visited, made me decide against mucking around with my dht for vanity's sake.

Yeah, as with anything online I didn't take it at face value (since they probably represent a minuscule percentage of users, some have other issues, some are nuts or just love bitching, etc) but there seemed to be enough shared sides mentioned, there and elsewhere, that I figured on playing it safe.  If I was having health issues (like BPH), instead of just hair loss, I wouldn't dismiss it.

I can recommend you from my own experience to stay away from that crap as far as you can. U need some DHT in your system (it makes u a man, androgenic), and that crap blocks out almost all of it. I used it during my 2nd Test cycle to prevent hair loss, but it made me lethargic, fucks with your mind, kills your Libido and drive (even on Test), no focus, like a Zombie.

Worst medication ever, makes u dysfunctional in every aspect of life. There's a reason why it still isn't licensed to treat hairloss, this stuff against hairloss is like breaking a fly on a wheel. Stick to Proscar, a 1000 times healthier which way less side effects.

Regarding higher Test levels due to Duta only, forget it! Maybe a few % (but no DHT at all which is, like I said, very important as well), but that's not even close of relevancy for muscle gains. To witness a significant difference in building muscle u need at least 2-3 times the amount of your normal levels. Very low dosed cycles (like 350 mg/week) are already 5 times the amount of Test a healthy, young guy can produce.

Yeah I was fine off it and hair grew back thicker.
No sides as the previous poster mentioned.

I think its all individual.
For instance I do not get on with androgens, even the slightest amount.

I can second everything he's saying.  Stay as far away from this as you can!  It fucked with my mind,  felt like I was in a daze all day, no concentration, I felt nauseous and dizzy to the point were I would almost pass out at times.  I also noticed wicked wrinkles around my eyes developing all of a sudden!  In short, I'd rather be bald than take this shit!  I'm back on Propecia and everything is well now.  Yes, DHT does play an important role in your mental and physical health!
