Maybe another 100 billion a year to the U.S. Dept of Education will fix it.

But seriously, the reading and science scores are actually good and above average. The math scores on the other hand....

Too bad we can't hand pick our best areas like the Chinese got to do. Regardless, embarrassing results.

It would be interesting to see the scores with the inner-city types and illegals taken out of the mix.

If we eliminated the inner city and the ESL students, we would be in the top 5. But BF nailed it on the head-- We don't hand pick anyone with potential; we force everyone, even idiots who have no business being in school past the 8th grade to go to high school and then we even force some to go to college in the name of "Equality". Vocational schools and other occupations aren't even considered, let alone encouraged.

Going into 7th grade my town took the top 40 or so of us and made two classes, one where there was a French class every day and one where there was Spanish every day. The students in these classes also had all their other classes together. The rest of the students had a language class every other day. That was the extent of my school district's nurturing of potential.  ::)

Funny thing was only like five kids initially signed up for French so they ended up having to draw names out of a hat and tell us we had to take French or nothing.

They identify children with potential at an early age and move them to the cities for schooling. They do the same shit with sports and everything else. They test kids around 3 years old for flexibility as well as balance and the good ones are shipped off to gymnastic schools or whatever.

Test the whole of China and they'd probably come up at the bottom. And it's not like China isn't known for doctoring the shit out of any statistics they touch (hello pollution levels at the 2008 Olympics).

Still, our education system is completely broken.

We also focus too much on the compensation and benes for the teachers and the unions and not enough on the results of the students,.

Being a teacher and being in the school systems of both "good" and "bad" schools.....I completely agree with this.

My point about teachers was meant that good ones get paid too little, and bad ones paid to much.   That is a union colective bargaining thing.

We need to encourage and reward the best and brightest to become teachers and not just have a union one sized fits all situation.

Haven't they started a program like that in DC and the unions shit a brick over it?
