Quote
Fifteen-year-old students in the United States ranked 25th of 34 countries on an international math test and scored in the middle of the pack in science and reading, raising concerns that the United States isn’t prepared to succeed in the global economy.

Teenagers from South Korea and Finland led in almost all academic categories on the 2009 Program for International Student Assessment, according to the Paris-based Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, which represents 34 countries. U.S. students ranked 17th in science and 14th in reading. The U.S. government considers the OECD test one of the most comprehensive measures of international achievement.

The results show that U.S. students must improve to compete in a global economy, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a telephone interview. The Obama administration is promoting national curriculum standards and a revamping of teacher pay that stresses performance, rather than credentials and seniority.

It comes down to poorly performing teachers  ???

Where are the parents being held accountable ?

I did bad in public school , I've got excellent parents.

I later went to private school (8th Grade) and graduated from a charter school (high school), whole different world.

All the public school teachers I encountered in 7 years were completely worthless people.  I had one great public school teacher in sixth grade.  I'd be the biggest fucking moron on Earth had I been subjected to anymore of their "educational abuse"...

There shouldn't be a difference in how children are taught and what level of knowledge is expected from them .. I think private schools and charter's are more tuned into quality .. whereas too much public education is geared towards pushing students thru to make room for more  :-\

Our education system is broken.  We should just give vouchers and let parents choose where to send their kids.  You would see a huge jump in quality of education, teachers, etc... as schools would compete for dollars.

I agree .. this is quite disheartening .. our country is not setting the bar high enough to ensure our youth can succeed at much anymore

so true.  Key thing is expectations that are put on kids....and anymore they are so low that they just want to shuttle them thru.

I don't stand behind the argument that if we paid the teachers more the education would be better ... I think they choose their career and accept the position knowing the salary.

If they don't feel it's fair wages then move on and look elsewhere ... don't just lose interest in what you are supposed to accomplish and let the children / our future suffer for it ... we are falling down the ladder quickly .. and being surpassed by poorer countries .. so money is not the cause of the problem.

It's the system that is failing because the curriculum is not maintaining advances that should be the goal/focus of our "free education" ... it's really not right that you can get a better education if you go to a private school .. each child should have the same chance to learn at the same rate across the board .

Teachers should be held accountable for failing students in some aspect .. it's not always the child's fault entirely .. and who should be in charge of making sure teachers are teaching ?

It's pretty damn easy to say open your book and read 2 chapters .. then write 4 paragraphs on what you read  ... or give the kids a calculator and let them do math problems ... how is that teaching them anything ? why should that earn pay of 60K a year ?

I just see the decline coming at a fast pace here .. and the whole country will suffer when these uneducated kids who mostly lack the drive to succeed are going to be in high positions and in charge of areas that affect everyone.

This country is getting itself into a place that will be awfully hard to overcome .. and it's sad to watch TBH

It comes down to leading a horse to a trough and getting him to drink...many students Thrive in the public schools...the ones who don't are weighed down by the social pressures to not show intellect...My sister is an English teacher in high school...

I think the idea is that if you paid more, you would draw more top notch minds who are now going the private sector route instead of teaching because the pay really does suck ass.  I think the stat is something like 50% of teaches leave the profession within 5 yrs, but I could be a bit off on that.  I think that is part of the problem too.  We have a ton of college students who think '"oh well, I'll just teach....easy schedule, etc..."  but they don't  realize it's a much tougher job than that and their hearts arent in it from the beginning.

We also need to think about more hs level industrial/tech schools where kids learn a trade who don't have the interest for other subjects.
