Steroid Nation
« on: December 14, 2010, 02:06:30 PM »
Reading this book now, very good.
Talks all about the Dan Duchaine stuff, from beginning to death, all the busts, etc.
Talks about "Famous Scientist" WN Phillips) Bill, from MM2K. (28 at the time).

How MM2K pimped Met-Rx, Phosphagen, etc. Pumping it up to make tons of cash.
Kim Wood, Bengals Strength Coach at the time, paid for an analysis on Metr-Rx when it was being promoted as "The strongest natural supplement that's closest to Steroids", and it turned out being basically powdered Slim Fast.

On the part now about Lyle Alzado's dying, had tumors floating his brain fluid that looked like moth balls.
Mentions the tons of different drugs he was doing (Veterinary, HGH from cadavers, etc.) for 20+ years straight.
said the rumors about him being a "toe toucher" and getting aids, was made up by the bodybuilding crowd, to sort of make themselves feel better, and prevent the outcry that Steroids kill. (Lyle was a big Golds gym guy, with many friends there).

Anyways, good book... even mentions that bodybuilding caters to G4P and Schmoes, no kidding!!   :-\

I believe that Kim Woods was a HIT guy, yes? Anyway, sounds like an interesting read.

Kim Wood was friends with Arthur Jones. Owned the Hammer Strength company after having a hand in designing the Hammer machines. Bengals strength Coach for 30 years. Knows everything there is to know in the Iron Game.

Speaking of Kim Wood and NFL strength coaches, is anyone familiar with some of the results that Arthur Jones got with some of the NFL players that he trained back in the 70s? Some pretty fascinating stuff actually 8)

DJ, the Miami Dolphins, I am told (for a period of time under Don Shula) didn't have a barbell in their weight room.
Only Nautilus equipment.
I had a framed picture somewhere that had some dude named Mercury using the Nautilus pullover, being watched over by Arthur Jones.  The pic was signed by Arthur and Mercury.

Are you serious? I find it really hard to believe that there wasn't a barbell at the Dolphins training center. Arthur often talked about the barbell squat, and that it was basically "The King" of all exercises.

That would be "Mercury" Morris.

Arthur Jones was something of a genius in that he had more than his share of common sense, especially so where it related to weight training.  And the squat is indeed, the king of exercises.

Just curious Reeves, what would you say is "The King" of upper body exercises? Dips? Bench Press? Another? My vote goes to Wide-grip Weighted Chins 8)

That's a tough one, but it is between dips and chins.  Bodyweight exercises are king.  There's a reason gorillas and gymnasts are so strong, they constantly move themselves.  When you get into the realm of dips and chins with extra weight you are on the way to real strength.  Marvin Eder was such a man.

I hear what your saying Reeves. My PR on dips was bodyweight+100 pounds for 8 reps, and bodyweight+50 pounds for 6 reps on Wide-grip Chins. I know there are some pretty impressive feats for weighted dips and I remember once when Casey Viator said that he could get 10 or so reps with 300 pounds added around his waist. I'm curious what is the best chin effort? Maybe 200 added for reps?

I think the bodyweight exercises are very important to have perfect form on, particularly dips.  I have noticed since I have virtually erased momentum that my gains have gotten better, even though the weight is lighter.

I'm curious Silver, how light is light? And when you talk about perfecting form, are you talking about slow reps? Remember, I you go heavy enough you can't move that fast, coz the heavy weight won't allow fast movement, at least during the postive concentric contraction.

DJ, I mean I have only seen a handful of men who could do 12 perfect chins (momentum free, full range).
There is a difference between moving fast, and using momentum.
Like Arthur Jones, after the first 2-3 reps, which should in my opinion be done a little slower than necessary, attempting to move the weight "fast" won't necessarily mean that the weight is moving fast.
And AJ would say wide grip chins are worthless, as they place the bicep in a very weak position.  Palms facing each other, or fully supinated, is the way AJ would have you do them.

Yeah man, I know that AJ would say do the chins with a shoulder-width grip or less with a supinated grip, but in my own personal experience the wide-grip ones really helped to give me a pretty body, V-back with relatively wide shoulders, and a trim narrow waistline with a narrow hip structure 8)

Did the book mention GetBigs very own "Pumpster"?  Would like to know what that guy was on and his training protocol.

Not sure why people keep linking Lyle Alzado's cancer to steroids or AIDS for that matter. I believe he had primary CNS lymphoma which can most certainly happen to normal people. I treat cancer for a living, and I doubt the two 30-40 year old HIV- females with the condition I saw in consultation recently ever used steroids. People always want an explanation for why they get cancer, but the reality is, in most cases we don't know. Chances are, it was just, well, chance that he got it.

Your prolly right, he would have probably gotten it anyways, but some say tons of anabolics and HGH "may" make hereditary issues show up sooner, who knows, hard to tell.. I salute you for what you do for a living!
