Dire Straits' 'Money for Nothing' Deemed Offensive In Canada, Can't Air

Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing" can no longer be played in Canada in its original form since the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has deemed the song offensive.

The decision stems from a listener's complaint last year calling the lyrics — which contain the word "f----t" — extremely offensive to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

The song, which has been a classic rock staple for 25 years, earned the band a Grammy for best rock performance. The then state-of-the-art computer-animation video was also the first music video to air on MTV Europe.

"Money for Nothing" -- co-written by Mark Knopfler and Sting — will have to be edited or cannot air, the council ruled.

The council said: "The societal values at issue a quarter-century later have shifted and the broadcast of the song in 2010 must reflect those values, rather than those of 1985."

that's bullshit if you ask me. Yet some not so hard core rap is played on the radio, killing cops, calling women names. Sure it's offensive but it's MY choice to listen to it or not. Can't make everyone happy

no clue sting co wrote that song though

I dont Mark (singer, vocal) ever sandg the original lyrics live. He always said things like trucker or mover.

Poor ruling. 

On another Canada note i see Stats Canada has said all jobs lost during the recession have been regained in that country.

People up here think the ruling sucks. It's pretty pointless at this point... 25 yrs later?  ::)
At the time I first heard it, I thought the lyrics were a little shocking, but 25 yrs later?!
It's not like it's being played on the radio these days anyway. Even some of the most conservative broadcasters are doing WTF editorials. More publicity for Dire Straits... possibly more royalties as well.
