Cold Weather & Turbo
« on: January 12, 2011, 12:09:47 PM »
I drive a car with twin turbos.  It is extra cold where I'm at today and I noticed that when I hit 1500 rpm I did not feel the slight jerk back from the turbo.  I thought the turbo was malfunctioning because it was cold, but isn't it supposed to work better in the cold?  My car is supposed to tell me (dashboard indicator) when it is not functioning at full power, but I did not get any indication that it was not at full power.  Has anyone else had this issue?

what was the engine temp?

when you first turn on a car the engine is running in open loop....which means the ECM is NOT reading any sensors at all...it is just the predetermined setting that you car runs on until it reaches full temp and goes closed loop...which means it reads all your sensor's and starts making adjustments for weather, and driving patterens...

if the car was in open loop the car was likely running like shit due to the denser air, and no ability to self correct....go drive it around for 45 minutes or so, and it will be a champ..

What's an easy way (not dynoing) to test if your car is operating at full power?  I think the turbo is kicking in, but at a higher rpm - around 1800-2000?

I'm not sure if the fuel injectors compensate for the super cold air or not, but it might be running lean if it's very cold?

I can hear the pump whizzing but how do I tell if it's compensating?

besides dyno...you can always datalog....i have tuned 1000rwhp+ cars before without ever putting them on the dyno....but the equipment cost more than the dyno time...if i had the car in front of me i could likely narrow it down...volt meter is your friend...but you have to know what to look for....

told you....just get it out of open loop and let it read, and adjust..
