Just another day in the world of Islam. How many attacks launched against Christians this week? Now we just need some moron like kcballer or emmortal to weave some fairy tale out of this.

Church Bomb Kills 21, Wounds 79 in Alexandria, Egypt
January 01, 2011, 9:08 AM EST

(Adds Interior Ministry comment in 10th paragraph, economist’s comment in 20th.)

Jan. 1 (Bloomberg) -- At least 21 people were killed and 79 wounded when a bomb exploded outside a Coptic Christian church in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria in the deadliest terrorist attack in Egypt since at least 2006.

The blast occurred after midnight as worshipers were leaving a New Year’s service, damaging the church, a nearby mosque and cars on the street, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on its website. “Foreign elements” appear to have been responsible for the blast, the ministry said, adding that it has increased security around churches nationwide “in light of the escalating threats from al-Qaeda to many countries.”

Al-Qaeda’s branch in Iraq said in November it would attack Christian targets after it claimed Egypt’s Coptic Church was holding two Christian women who had converted to Islam. The Church has denied this charge. No group has claimed responsibility for today’s blast.

The attack bears the “fingerprints” of al-Qaeda, said Amr El-Shobaki, an expert on Islamist groups at the Cairo-based Al Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies. “It was either successful in planting a cell in Egypt or recruited individuals to carry out a single operation,” he said.

“This will deepen the tension between Muslims and Christians in Egypt, El-Shobaki said in a phone interview. Confrontations between the two communities have increased for several years.

‘Cut Off the Hand’

Analysts have previously said that they didn’t see signs of an organized presence in Egypt by Islamic extremist groups such as al Qaeda, whose top deputy leader, Ayman Al-Zawahiri, is Egyptian.

Police waged a war with Islamist militants, mainly in southern Egypt, during the 1990s. In 1997, militants killed more than 60 tourists in the ancient city of Luxor, sparking a security crackdown that brought attacks to a halt.

That respite ended with a series of bombings from 2004 to 2006 targeting resorts in the Sinai peninsula, killing more than 100 Egyptian and foreign tourists. The three attacks in Sinai, which police blamed on a previously unknown local group, occurred on the eve of national holidays. More than 20 people died in a 2006 bombing in the resort of Dahab, a year after more than 60 were killed in a similar incident in Sharm El-Sheikh.

The explosion in Alexandria was likely carried out by a suicide bomber who was also killed in the blast, the Interior Ministry said.

“It has been confirmed that the epicenter of the blast wasn’t in one of the cars or the road, which makes it likely that the device was carried by a suicide man who was killed with the rest,” the ministry said.

President Hosni Mubarak, in a televised speech today, vowed to find those responsible for the attack in a televised speech today. “We will cut off the hand of terrorism,” he said.

“You are making a grave mistake if you think that you will be spared the punishment of Egyptians,” Mubarak said, addressing the perpetrators.

Copts

The blast badly damaged other cars on the street, television footage showed. Scores of Copts, encircled by security forces, gathered before the church to protest the attack.

In January 2010, six Christians were killed in a drive-by shooting outside a church in southern Egypt, and in November police killed a protester during clashes with Copts triggered by a halt to the construction of a church.

Copts account for about 10 percent of Egypt’s population of 80 million people. The Coptic Orthodox Church was founded in Alexandria in the first century by Mark, one of the apostles of Jesus. After an Arab army conquered Egypt in the seventh century, Islam gradually became the country’s dominant religion.

Tensions between the two communities, reported in the government-controlled and independent press, have been building for several years. In 2004, Christians in Cairo claimed that the wife of a Coptic priest was forced to convert to Islam. After a riot in which 50 people were injured, the government ordered her returned to her Coptic family. In 2005, Muslims in Alexandria demonstrated against a DVD in which a Coptic youth converts to Islam and then changes his mind.

In late 2008, riots erupted in Ain Shams, a district of Cairo, after Copts renovated a former underwear factory and held mass there.

Egypt, set to hold presidential election in September, relies on tourism as a key source for foreign currency along with foreign direct investment and revenue from the Suez Canal.

Tourism accounts for 13 percent of jobs in the Arab country. The government aims to attract 16 million tourists in 2011, bringing in $14 billion in revenue, Tourism Minister Zoheir Garranah said in an interview in October.

“If there is any negative impact on tourism it will be in the short-term,” Alia Mamdouh, an economist at Cairo-based investment bank CI Capital, said by telephone.

Egypt’s benchmark EGX30 stock index closed 0.9 percent higher on Dec. 30, taking its gains in 2010 to 15 percent, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The market is closed today.

Not that I expect the far-left to actually care about the ever-increasing persecution of Christians at the hands of Egypt's Muslim population.

Egyptian Security Guards Withdrew One Hour Before Church Blast, Say Eyewitnesses," by Mary Abdelmassih for AINA, January 2:

(AINA) -- The car explosion that went off in front of Saints Coptic Orthodox Church in Alexandria killed 21 and injured 96 parishioners who were attending a New Year's Eve Mass. According to church officials and eyewitnesses, there are many more victims that are still unidentified and whose body parts were strewn all over the street outside the church. The body parts were covered with newspapers until they were brought inside the church after some Muslims started stepping on them and chanting Jihadi chants (video showing dead bodies and limbs covered with newspapers in the street).
According to eyewitnesses, a green Skoda car pull up outside the church shortly after midnight. Two men got out , one of them talked shortly on his mobile phone, and the explosion occurred almost immediately after they left the scene. On the back of the Skoda was a sticker with the words "the rest is coming" (video of car explosion and Muslims shouting "Allah Akbar").

It was reported that the bomb, locally made, had 100KG of explosives in addition to having nails, glass and iron balls inside. The strength of it not only caused glass panes to be shattered in all the neighborhood, but also made body parts fly into the building's fourth floor, and to the mosque facing the church.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but officials hastily blamed either Al-Qaida or the Israeli Mousad of being behind the blast, but none of them mentioned the Egyptian state security which is viewed by Copts as the real culprit.

To clear his security forces of negligence, the Minister of Interior said that the blast was an "individual" case, caused by a single suicide terrorist detonating his vest, and has nothing to do with an exploding car. The governor of Alexandria claimed the attack as being aimed at Muslims and Christians alike.

After the blast, traumatized Copts were angered by chants of "Allah Akbar" from Muslims and began hurling stones at the mosque. Immediately security forces which were absent during the car blast and the ensuing events, appeared and starting shooting tear gas at the Copts, and they in turn hurled stones at them, said an eyewitness. Fifteen Copts were rounded up from their homes by the authorities.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that security forces guarding the church withdrew nearly one hour before the blast, leaving only four policemen and an officer to guard such a big church and nearly 2000 people attending the midnight mass. "Normally they would have waited until the mass was over," said el-Gezeiry. He also commented on the Muslim's schadenfreude at the massacre at the church, who were heard chanting "Allah Akbar.".

On January 6 2010, just before the Christmas Eve Massacre in Nag Hammadi, security withdrew its forces from guarding the church a couple of hours before the shooting of the Coptic congregation took place.

Attorney Mamdouh Nakhla, Head of Al-Kalema Human Rights Center, wondered if state security is an accomplice or just too cowardly to confront the Islamists in Egypt who carried out the Church massacre. "The crime is local and those who committed it are known, in addition there was a demonstration on the same day using the same rhetoric like al-Qaida. The Al Mujahedeen website threatens to repeat the attack in more churches. The site has addresses of churches and even how to make a bomb. Does security not know about it?"

"Anyone who says that it was a foreign or Israeli plot is trying to play down the crime and is trying to clear those murderers of this massacre, and I consider them their accomplices," said Nakhla.

Nakhla said that he was preparing a complaint to be presented to President Mubarak asking for the resignation of Interior Minister Habib el Adly for failing in his duty of protecting the Copts, and for not telling the truth by saying that it was a suicide attack by one individual, when everyone could see the detonated car, just to clear his security personnel of the responsibility of letting the Skoda park in front of the church. "This 100KG bomb could not have been transported by one individual as the Interior Minister wants us to believe."...

Religion of peace.

Peaceful, tolerant people gather at the scene of a massacre and chant "Allah Akbar".  ::)

Ahh yes, the Crusades, favorite talking points of the revisionist anti-Christian brigade (as seen on Getdumb). I always find it convenient that they ignore the 100 years of Muslim's massacring, pillaging and raping the Christian population across the Middle East that was the cause of the Crusades.

Who am I kidding? Islam's been getting a free pass for 1400+ years now.  ::)

Egypt on high alert ahead of Coptic Christmas
AFP – Egyptian Christians burn rubbish containers during a protest near the Al-Qiddissin (The Saints) church …

by Samer al-Atrush Samer Al-atrush – Mon Jan 3, 9:10 am ET

CAIRO (AFP) – Egypt was on high alert on Monday ahead of the Coptic Christmas holiday following a New Year's Day church bombing that killed 21 people, as investigators raced to identify those behind the attack.

Police cancelled leave for senior officers and were tightening surveillance of airports and ports to prevent suspects from leaving the country, as new checkpoints were set up across the nation.

Security was also to be beefed up at churches for Christmas which Copts celebrate on January 7, security officials said.

The clampdown comes amid concerns of new protests by Copts following overnight clashes at Cairo's St. Mark's Cathedral -- headquarters of Coptic leader Pope Shenouda III -- during which 45 policemen were wounded.

A health ministry official said 27 other people were also wounded.

The protesters pelted with stones a minister who had come to visit the pope and heckled government officials, while other demonstrators blocked off four main streets in Cairo before police dispersed them.

The violence died down on Monday, but witnesses said about 30 protesters prevented a construction crew from repairing damage at the site of the blast, saying the blood of the victims should remain to bear testimony to the attack.

About 50 protesters carrying wooden coffins also staged a brief demonstration in central Cairo.

Coptic Christmas will fall on Friday -- the weekly Muslim day of prayer and rest -- and Shenouda said he intended to say mass as usual on Christmas Eve.

"Not praying would mean that terrorism has deprived us of celebrating the birth of Christ," the official Al-Ahram newspaper quoted him as saying.

Twenty-one people were killed early on New Year's Day and 79 wounded when an apparent suicide bomber detonated his payload as hundreds of worshippers were leaving Al-Qiddissin (The Saints) church in Alexandria after midnight.

A security official said on Sunday that about 20 people were detained for questioning but there was no evidence any of them was directly connected to the attack.

Al-Ahram quoted security officials as saying that the bomb was a sophisticated device packed with TNT and pieces of metal aimed at causing the largest possible number of casualties.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack, which came two months after an Al-Qaeda-linked group said it was behind a deadly Baghdad church hostage-taking and threatened Coptic Christians as well.

The group demanded the release of two women, Camelia Shehata and Wafa Constantine, both priests' wives, it said the Coptic church was holding against their will after they converted to Islam.

An Al-Qaeda-linked website that published that threat posted in December a list of Egyptian churches it said should be attacked, including the church targeted in the Alexandria bombing.

It urged "every Muslim who cares about the honour of his sisters to bomb these churches during Christmas celebrations, when they will be most crowded."

Egypt, the most populous Arab country, witnessed a resurgence in attacks by Islamist militants in the past decade after the government battled a spate of attacks in the 1990s that included an attempt abroad to kill the president.

President Hosni Mubarak has vowed to find those responsible for the bombing which he said targeted all Egyptians, regardless of their faith, and blamed "foreign hands."

The bombing has further underscored the vulnerability of the Copts, who make up about 10 percent of the country's 80-million population and complain of discrimination.

Last year began with a massacre of six Copts and a Muslim security guard after a Coptic Christmas Eve mass and ended on a tense note after two Coptic protesters died in clashes in a protest over a Cairo church permit.

Some Coptic activists have accused the government of not doing enough to prevent incitement against the minority, especially after Islamists began staging regular demonstrations demanding Shehata's release.

Shehata, like Constantine in 2004, fled from her husband last year and reportedly wanted a divorce, which is very difficult to obtain from the Coptic church.

The church has denied that either of the women converted. Women's rights activists say Coptic women have been known to convert, either to Islam or to another Christian denomination, to escape unhappy marriages.

The only thing you've actually done is provide some stupid fucking statistics that actually owned your entire argument in that a single attack carried out by Muslims killed 100x the amount of people that were killed in all the other attacks COMBINED.

Your argument revolves around your idiotic notion that vandalism is worse than mass murder of civilians.  :o  ::)

Don't worry, though, kcballer is still a bigger apologist than you are.

That was fast. Someone must be spamming f5 on this thread. Calm down, Abu Hamzi, we don't need you embarrassing yourself and derailing this thread again.

I'm surprised you found your nuts and actually posted in it. Trash like yourself usually avoid threads like these because it's not possible to spin the blame of the Muslims and onto the evil Westerners.

Your old, tired recycled retorts might be funny in your own little mind, but they offer nothing for me to even respond to.  You have as much substance as a Dr. Seuss book.  You can't even come up with anything insulting to prove your argument so you fabricate unintelligible lines of bullshit to satisfy your meager ego.  I would have a better conversation with a lump of coal than to continue reading your drivel.

The only derailment in this thread is your continuous shameful display of your utter lack of anything worthy of interest.  Like a horrible car accident, I can't stop but look and watch in awe as you furiously pound your keyboard in another pitiful response.

Also to note, Muslims and their apologists the world over have taken to blaming this attack on everyone but Muslims themselves because, as you know, Muslims are incapable of taking responsibility for anything whatsoever. That, coupled with the enabling of this fabricated innocence by people like Emmortal, has made it so that Muslims can kill with impunity, even if they gather around after the attack and chant "Allah Akbar" while the innocent victims try to pick up the body parts.

Sickening.
