Being from Hawaii it does us proud to see a local boy go so far. Even more so for me since I knew him when he was coming up through the Jiu-Jitsu tournament circuit. Those of us in the Jiu-Jitsu world knew he was destined for great things.
But tonight I think he lost to John Fitch. BJ beat him in the first round. The second could have gone either way though I actually gave Fitch the edge. BJ got dominated in the third round. He was starting to get that look on his face that he gets when his will is being broken. He should be grateful that it was not a 5 rounder.
BJ got a huge gift tonight because if he lost I really don't know where that would leave him. In fact, I'm not sure where they go from here. A non-title five rounder?
I'll say this, and it's just what I hear from people closer to the scene in Hilo than I am, BJ does not have the greatest camp in the world. At his school he's the boss, the alpha alpha, he calls the final shots. Everything revolves around him and he's surrounded by fans rather than gritty trainers. With Fitch he's just one of many top fighters in his camp. Nothing stops when he enters the training facility. With BJ when he walks in everyone knows he's the man.
