That was actually a decent debate for a change. A few observations:
- Romney sounded pretty good. He brings a great business background to the table. That will really help him in the general if he gets the nomination. He'll have to overcome the cynicism about his flip flops.
- Was surprised by Santorum. I never really pay attention to him, but he actually did a good job. Will never win, but said some good things.
- Huntsman is a good "new" voice to have in the race. His biggest problem will not be working for Obama, but sharing some of Obama's big government views, like the stimulus, etc.
- Ron Paul continued to beat the debt drum, which is good. That's what everyone should be talking about. I cringe when he talks foreign policy. Doesn't consider Iran a threat? Let them develop nuclear weapons?
- Gingrich was decent, but his prepared response about "gotcha" questions was a little silly. He should be asked tough questions. The bad thing about it was he actually had a good explanation for his campaign turmoil, but that was lost with the whining about how questions were being asked.
- Cain was sort of an afterthought. Didn't get a lot of questions. He would be a good part of the new cabinet.
- Pawlenty was pretty blah. Spent too much time attacking Bachmann. Not his best performance. He lacks the charisma to be a successful national candidate IMO.
- Bachmann looked a little stiff at times. Loved her response to the dumb question about submitting herself to her husband. Submission means mutual respect. She was all over Obama. She's going to do well in the primaries.
Overall, I still think Romney is the frontrunner, followed by Bachmann. Based on what I'm reading, Perry will probably be right in that mix.
