Capitalism - what are your opinions?
« on: August 27, 2011, 12:25:40 PM »
1)  Why do some people say they dislike Capitalism?

2)  Are there any established systems (or as yet not established) that would be preferable to Capitalism in your opinion?

Capitalism is good

Pure capitalism is bad

Capitalism with some regulation is good

Monopolies or lack of competition to do a monopoly by a few companies is bad

Thanks OzmO!

With the exception of the Phone Company which has been taken care of long ago, do you know what companies most people are talking about (in America) while bemoaning the "evils" of Capitalism?

Banks and oil companies. Of course no one bemoans the evils of wasteful govt. picking winners, losers and burning through hundreds of billions+ when it comes to dumping untold amounts of cash/subsidies/ etc into ethanol, wind power and solar and whatever else requires huge amounts of govt. money to survive.

The banks owe the government a huge high five, though.

In addition to everything GigX said, i would say off the top of my head:  Walmart, home depot, best buy and Media (radio, news papers, TV).  These aren't necessarily evil, but companies like these and their buying power and prices make it near impossible for small business.

Thanks Gigantor and OzmO.

My last 2 kitchen appliances and computers I bought at "mom and pops" so I do understand that issue somewhat.

As for the banks...can you be more specific what they hate about them?  Like regular banks or wall-street type institutions?

And why do they hate the oil companies?  Seems as though 99+% need/use things made from oil.  Do they feel they are gouged price-wise?

I know I sound clueless... ...thanks :)

Watch the movie Meltdown.  Its available on Netflix i think.

Basically our government no matter what administration is in office does what the 9 major banks tell us to do.

There seem to be a lot of movies entitled "Meltdown."

Can you please give the year it was made?  Thanks!

Maybe this one?

Frontline: Inside the Meltdown (2009)

Shining a light on the economic meltdown that changed the mood of the 2008 presidential election, this edition of "Frontline" offers an inside look at what caused the crisis and who -- if anyone -- could have stopped it. Segments focus on the failures of Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers and AIG; the U.S. government bailout costing taxpayers $700 billion; and the roles of the U.S. Treasury and the Federal Reserve in repairing the damage.

I haven't seen the one above, but I do recommend this one:

Inside Job (2010)

From filmmaker Charles Ferguson comes this sobering, Oscar-winning documentary that presents in comprehensive yet cogent detail the pervasive and deep-rooted corruption that led to the global economic meltdown of 2008. Through unflinching interviews with key financial insiders, politicos, journalists and academics, Ferguson paints a galling portrait of an unfettered financial system run amok -- without accountability. Actor Matt Damon narrates.

This isn't capitalism, this is fascism and corportism.  In a truly capitalist environment the banks would have collapsed and went under there would be no oil subsidies or help from the government toward oil.

This is complete nonsense.  Capitalism is by far the best system, just because America has fucked it up beyond belief doesn't mean it's a horrible system.   You should go educate yourself on what capitalism actually is instead of making retarded comments like the one above.

I assume we're only talking about Americans?

Also are we talking about people who are against capitalism or people who have issues/dislikes with capitalism in its current state?  There are many who dislike capitalism in its current state but are not fundamentally against it.  Many just have an issue with how the system is so vulnerable to self destruction.  Where big business, acting in their own interest, has more influence with government than the people it's wide open for major problems that effect us all and we've watched that shit happen over and over and increase problems.  So yea there are a lot of people who dislike what's going on now.  Do they want it fixed or do they think it's just fine the way it is?  IMO the people who actually are fundamentally against capitalism in this country are not great in number.  It's actually a very small number of people in America that are outright against capitalism.

I dislike capitalism in the current state but I'm not against it.  I think it's absolutely the best system, even the commies lol are doing it now....
