Moderate alcohol use may actually be beneficial to one's health. Some studies suggest a correlation between low to moderate amounts of alcohol consumption and decreased risks of stroke, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and perhaps an overall decreased mortality rate.

Historically doctors have promoted alcohol for its perceived health benefits and most recently for protection against coronary heart disease. There is evidence of cardiovascular benefits from drinking 1 - 2 drinks per day; however, the health benefits from moderate intake of alcohol are controversial.

Drinking lots of alcohol has been negatively linked to stroke. According to the National Stroke Association, more than 2 drinks per day (one drink is ~5 ounces of wine) may increase stroke risk by 50% and lead to other medical problems. Because of this and other known harmful effects of heavy drinking, care should be taken when considering safe amounts of alcohol intake.

Drinking in moderation has been found to help those who have suffered a heart attack survive it. However, excessive alcohol consumption leads to an increased risk of heart failure.

Sad to say, I am not always a moderate drinker myself. However, I'd rather know the risks involved with drinking than not. More importantly, the originator of this thread suggested that any alcohol consumption was bad for one's health. That simply is not the case.

Some may imagine it is bearish, alpha male, masculine or whatever to chug down a shit load of alcohol. I disagree. A real man, knows what is good for them and what is not. If one drinks at all, a real man drinker is one who drinks sensibly.

You sound like the kinda guy people walk away from at a party.....  :-\

;D   Nah, I agree actually.  I overdo it on occasion, but see nothing wrong with some consumption.  Alot of the attitudes about alcohol in America are just a carry-over from the "puritan era" and is mostly just a social stigma.

Wondered why I was standing alone at the last party I went to.  :-\  Actually, I do pretty well in a group setting like a party. I like people and I like hearing what they have to say....even when I don't agree with it. Believe it or not I am a good listener. This probably explains why people tend to tell me more about themselves than I'd expect to hear.

Yeah, I hear you. Whenever I put away almost a fifth of scotch in an evening, I think about how bad this is for my health and yet I still do this on occasion.  I am very uninhibited normally, this makes it harder to "measure" how drunk I am because I don't change when I've had a few (too many) like most folks do.

I cannot be sure BUT I have a theory that moderate alcohol helps your body because it relaxes you and thus REDUCES STRESS.

Stress, from what I know, is the #1 health risk factor. It leads to inflammation in your arteries which then allows LDL (bad cholesterol) to stick to the interior lining. The theory is that inflammation in your arteries causes tiny cracks and fissures to develop. As LDL is made up of 2 types, a large fluffy type and a smaller more compact type the smaller compact type can fit into these tiny fissures and then as other LDL passes by it sticks to the LDL already stuck in place and a thrombus begins to develop. Over time it gets bigger and bigger and you get atherosclerosis.

I am not a doctor so I can not say for sure but I truly believe ANYTHING which reduces stress will be good for you. If this is true, you do not need alcohol to reduce risk factors, just find ways of destressing your body. I think the study found a convenient way to justify drinking booze but in truth you do not need alcohol to reduce risk factors to your health.

i tend to agree with that theory. alcohol also decreases food consumption over time.

Im watching this Intervention online right now where a guy drinks 30 beers a day.

Crazy. I have a friend like that from my hometown. Female. Sad to see. when i visit her and she is sober, her hands are always shaking and she seems really uncomfortable. I don't really know any conventional junkies, but I think it's pretty close.

Statins work like lipitor because it stops your liver from making cholesterol.  Most people with high cholesterol it's because their liver is making cholesterol.  This could be from a genetic predisposition or to much viseral fat that leads to metabolic syndrome. To much alcohol will lead to an increase of estrogen and fat that will lead to increased viseral fat.  That could lead to a fatty liver that will produce cholesterol in excess.

I have never heard of inflamation tied to stress but I wouldn't discount it. Inflamation factors can be measured by a common blood test for cardiac inflamation.

I believe inflamation can be decreased by lowering viseral fat and increasing your aerobic fitness.

One's liver is normally a very tough resilient organ. The liver can actually repair itself. However, dump enough alcohol into your system for a long enough time and your liver will be compromised. People whose livers are already in distress because of hep C, many drugs, or some oral steroids would do well to seriously limit or discontinue all alcohol use. Because I take a statin, my doctor orders labs for my liver enzymes every six months. So far so good.
