Reid blocks attempt by McConnell to vote on president's jobs bill

In a lively spat on the Senate floor Tuesday, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) attempted call up President Obama’s jobs plan for an immediate vote in the upper chamber.

However, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who supports the legislation, blocked the vote.

Reid used a procedural maneuver called "filling the tree," which allows the majority leader to say a piece of legislation has had all of its possibilities for amendments.
McConnell had tried to offer the president's job package as an amendment to the China currency legislation, which was being debated in chamber. By "filling the tree," Reid blocked that move.

“What I am trying to do here today by requesting this vote on the president’s jobs bill ... is to honor the request of the president of the United States that we vote on it now,” McConnell said. “He has been asking us repeatedly over the last few weeks that we vote on it now.”

“I think the president of the United States, whose polices I generally do not support ... is entitled to know where the Senate stands on his proposal that he has been out talking about ... and suggesting that we are unwilling to vote on it," he said.

Reid called McConnell’s request a “political stunt” and “senseless."

“What a charade we have going on here,” Reid said. “[W]e now have a proposal that is ridiculous on its face ... that is that we vote with no debate on the president’s jobs bill.”

If successful, McConnell's move would have put Democrats in a tough spot as they do not have enough support for the bill. The GOP leader, before he brought up the legislation, made it clear he was doing it to embarrass Democrats.

Obama on Monday called on Congress to vote on his jobs package. But Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said Tuesday the president's proposal would likely have to change in order to win passage.

Reid insisted that the president’s demand that Congress vote on the bill “now” did not necessarily mean all other legislative activities had to come to a halt. Reid also renewed an earlier pledge to bring the bill up for a procedural vote this month.

“Right away is a relative term,” Reid said. " sponsored it, I am the one who brought it to the floor. We need to move to this right away ... I have said I will bring it to the floor this work period.”

McConnell said he would make every effort to force an immediate vote on the legislation.

Don't these DEMOCRATS know that they're supposed to "pass this bill NOW"? What gives? Why are these pussies so afraid to vote on tax increases? They're always so quick to call for them yet they never want to vote on them. Class warfare masters.

Obama Campaign Says GOP Blocking Jobs Bill--After Reid Blocks Jobs Bill
4:17 PM, OCT 4, 2011    • BY MICHAEL WARREN

The Obama campaign sent out an email today asking supporters to urge Congress to at least vote on the president’s jobs bill almost immediately after Democratic majority leader Harry Reid blocked a vote on the bill in the Senate.

On the Senate floor today, Republican leader Mitch McConnell asked for unanimous consent to proceed on voting on the bill. Reid, who has struggled to find enough votes for the bill in the Democratic caucus, objected to the motion and killed the opportunity for a vote.

About ten minutes later, Jim Messina, Obama’s 2012 campaign manager, emailed this message to supporters:

President Obama is in Dallas today urging Americans who support the American Jobs Act to demand that Congress pass it already.

Though it's been nearly a month since he laid out this plan, House Republicans haven't acted to pass it. And House Majority Leader Eric Cantor is out there actually bragging that they won't even put the jobs package up for a vote -- ever.

It's not clear which part of the bill they now object to: building roads, hiring teachers, getting veterans back to work. They're willing to block the American Jobs Act -- and they think you won't do anything about it.

But here's something you can do: Find Republican members of Congress on Twitter, call them out, and demand they pass this bill.

So will the Obama campaign be asking its supporters to "call out" Harry Reid and "demand" he and Senate Democrats pass the bill?

Just when you think this guy can't embarrass himself any more than he already has.

Amazing. Why is Reid blocking this? Why are Democrats so quick to demand tax increases yet always craven when it comes time to vote for them? Bunch of pussies.

While that's true, let's not take away from the fact that Dems are nothing more than cowardly pussies who know that voting for tax increases is going to cost them seats in the next election.  :)

We already have the obamacare tax increases and the bush tax cuts are set to sunset again.

Problem w this bill is that demos are scared shitless over other solyndras popping up.

Just a reminder: Obama’s jobs bill still has no cosponsors

Remember when Barack Obama addressed a joint session of Congress to introduce his American Jobs Act, exhorting them on national television to “pass this bill immediately”? Obama used that phrase in various forms 17 times despite the fact that he didn’t actually have a bill to present to Congress until a week later. And as far as all but two members of Congress are concerned, the bill itself may as well not exist. No co-sponsors have added their names to either the Senate or the House version even after more than a week

...

We have a federal system, not a parliamentary system, so our legislature doesn’t take votes of no-confidence to force an executive out of power. But given the high-profile rollout of the AJA by Obama, including his demand for a joint session to escalate pressure for action, the lack of any co-sponsors on these bills is about as close as we’ll get to a vote of no confidence in this executive short of an outright floor-vote failure in the Senate on the bill.

There is a story in The Hill today about Obama and the senate demos hating each other on a few issues.

After reading Confidence Men, it's obvious this admn really believes it is the imperial presidency.

Tense Senate exchange flares over president's jobs bill (Rats block Obama's "jobs bill")

In response to President Barack Obama's repeated calls for Congress to pass his jobs bill right away, Senate Republicans tried to call his bluff and force a quick vote on that legislation Tuesday.

The move, which Democrats blocked, was designed by Republicans to highlight that even some Democratic senators oppose the president's plan and it can't pass.

The president "is entitled to know where the Senate stands on his proposal that he has been out talking about over and over again the last few weeks suggesting that we are unwilling to vote on it," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, said on the floor while holding up a thick copy of the bill. "We don't agree that it is the right policy but we are willing to vote on it."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, said McConnell's effort was "nothing more than a political stunt" because it wouldn't provide for a full debate on the president's plan, which Obama first unveiled to a joint session of Congress in September.

The Senate floor exchange took place moments before the president delivered a speech in Texas where he again challenged Congress to take up his bill.

I hope MoveOn is paying 180 overtime as he's been working (and failing) pretty hard to deflect attention from Downgrade's daily failures.
