Are you a story teller?
« on: October 09, 2011, 08:50:21 PM »
Alright here goes was at my grandmothers with a few of here friends(their in their 60s) and they spent about two hours talking in stories(everyone would take turns  for five minutes at a time, it was nice but still kinda wierd). Is this shit normal, is this an old fucks thing, a baby boomer thing, a white people thing, or have I spent to much time around the wrong people.

???

Do you mean, just telling a "story", as in making one up. Or sharing an experience? With one side of my family, when we get together, we don't even really watch TV, just talk to each other, different "stories" about growing up, etc. And our phones don't work in the house unless you have Verizon...because it's deep in a rural gulley..(think Pet Cemetary)

Nowadays, most families don't talk to one another---kids too busy on the computer or phones---and then wonder why nobody understands them.

A lot of road musicians do this too. White, black and the purples ones even do it too.

Usually if one is dominating the story telling, he's the one "holding court." This could be because he's an ego maniacal bastard (in music that's often the case) or it could also just be due to the lack of stories the people around you have. I started touring and playing so young, as well as got out of it jaded and bitter at a young age too, that when I'm at gatherings now, I'm the one holding court. Just because I have interesting stories and people ask me to tell more.  :-\

I donno man I guess what I'm use to is more gossip.
I went to the store man and fuck this chick was hot as fuck, or man I was hanging out with stuart and his ego was all out of control and shit.

But these old folks make into this big epic, I went to the and I thought to myself, this can't be happening, I looked at the women and said blah blah, and then this and blah blah. Like there not sharing an experience they just turn it into some long drawn out story instead of sharing what happened.

I donno I guess I thought it was only chicks that get on with all this emotional constant, I donno maybe it's just there stories are lamer than the ones me and my friends get on with who knows.

I find it always turns into talking about themselves, gossiping or just bitching about something.

It can turn into that. But if you get a few friends, people asking you specific questions or people together from the old days, some really good stuff can be drawn from the depths of your memory bank. I sometimes find myself having a hard time remembering all the details of certain stories even if it does seem like yesterday that it happened.

There's no exchange it's people taking turns getting on with random crap, the best way I can put it is they grew up without tv, and subsitute story telling with watching tv. I donno I've noticed it with alot of older people, younger people seem to have a very condensed form of it.
I donno I guess it's like comparing the godfather with the soprano's. One's a story and the others dialogues.

Don't know what to tell you...I'm just going off my personal experience. From what it sounds like to me, what you're watching is people trying to get more attention than the next guy.

Nah these people are very reserved, again I think the reserved part of it might something to do with  it. The big thing is, everyone lets everyone take a turn, with no interjections or anything, usually this shit only happens when someone's a jackoff it was nice how they did it, I've just never seen young people do it.
