150 dead in Nigerian terror attacks(The Australian) — Up to 150 people were killed in a wave of gun and bomb attacks in northern Nigeria, which were claimed by the Islamist Boko Haram sect.
President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday condemned the assaults, which included at least five suicide bombings and directed security agencies “to ensure the arrest of perpetrators of these heinous acts”, said his spokesman, Reuben Abati.
As bodies piled up in the morgue, a rescue official said the death toll stood at 150.
The UN Security Council issued a statement condemning the attacks “in the strongest terms”, and expressing condolences to victims’ families.
The bomb and gun attacks targeted police stations, an army base and churches in the cities of Damaturu, Maiduguri and two other small towns.
Nigeria’s Boko Haram group claimed responsibility. “We are responsible for the attacks in Borno state and Damaturu,” said Abul Qaqa.
