The New York Police Department has foiled an alleged terror plot targeting law enforcement and soldiers returning from the battlefield. The New York Times reported that 27-year-old Jose Pimentel was acting as a 'lone wolf' and was taken into custody Saturday.

He allegedly was inspired by Al-Qaida, although his citizenship was not immediately known.

A Dominican with an anti-American grudge has been busted for building a bomb in his upper Manhattan apartment to blow up a police station, sources said Sunday night.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is holding a terrorism-related press conference tonight at 7:30 pm. NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly and District Attorney Cy Vance will also be in attendance. This is a late breaking addition to Bloomberg's schedule — and the presence of Vance indicates there may have been some sort of arrest. Neither the Mayor's Office nor the NYPD are releasing any information prior to the press conference.

UPDATE 6:24: NBC's Jesse Rodriguez tweets: WNBC: Terror suspect taken into custody yesterday; lone-wolf suspect was preparing a pipe bomb.

UPDATE 6:28: The New York Times is reporting that the NYPD had the suspect under surveillance for about a year — and that he had started to construct a bomb, with the intended target an NYC government building.

UPDATE 6:33: The New York Post has details on the suspect's would-be targets: "city police facilities and US military sites, where he plotted to target returning war personnel and the families who gathered to welcome them home."

Man Is Said to Be Arrested in Bid to Kill Government Workers With Bomb

The authorities have arrested a man who law enforcement officials believe was planning to build and detonate a bomb in New York with government workers as the target, a person briefed on the case said on Sunday.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly of the New York Police Department, and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. were expected to announce the charges against the man at 7:30 p.m. at a news conference at City Hall.

The man was arrested within the last 24 hours.

The defendant in the case – whose identity could not be learned – had bought bomb-making materials and “began to build them,” said the person briefed on the case, who added that the Police Department had had the man under surveillance for about a year.

NEW YORK (AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sunday an al-Qaida sympathizer who plotted to bomb police and post offices in New York City has been arrested on numerous charges.

Bloomberg announced the Saturday arrest of 27-year-old Jose Pimentel of Manhattan, a U.S. citizen originally from the Dominican Republic.

Too bad it didn't accidentally go off and just kill him.

NYPD needs to consult with the CIA on these types of things.  :D
