PR Nightmare for the Obamas

One can understand an American president’s lobbying for an American city to obtain the Olympics, but the blitz by the Obamas proved a PR nightmare. Let us count the ways:

1) Obama’s brand is trans-nationalism and an “America is not exceptional” multiculturalism. According to his worldview, it makes sense that a South American country — especially a powerful, ascendant country such as Brazil — should at last have its turn at hosting the Olympics. It did not seem consistent that a politician who had reached out to the Castros, Chávez, Morales, and Ortega, in parochial fashion, would lobby for his own hometown over a “yes, we can” Latin American initiative, especially one involving an exciting city such as Rio.

2) The Obama lobbying speeches were counterproductive. The world has its own inspirational narratives and is not impressed that much by the Obamas’ Chicago sagas. It was accidental but unfortunate that the global viewers had seen some horrific YouTube clips of street fighting in the Windy City, and then were told by Michelle that her father had taught her how to land a right hook, and that it was a sacrifice for her to fly to Denmark to make the case for Chicago.

3) The Chicago bit was overdone. Obama should remember that there is a perfect storm brewing: The more we hear about Valerie Jarrett, Rahm Emanuel, Bill Ayers, and all his old Chicago friends, along with rumors about Tony Rezko–style backroom deals to cash in on Chicago real estate involving the Olympics, and continuing stories about Chicago’s street violence and corruption — the more it hurts the president to be identified as a “Chicago politician” who tries in heavy-handed fashion to implement change through the “Chicago way.” To a younger Obama, Chicago was the romantic can-do town of Reverend Wright, Michael Jordan, Oprah, and the Daley machine; to the world at large, it is something quite different, and far more unappealing.

4) Obama’s messianic appeal is wearing thin, both at home and abroad. I think that once Sarkozy essentially said to the world, “The emperor has no clothes,” the Obama facade crumbled.

And here we are.

50% of the population are complete idiots.  The same 50% who dont approve of him are the same 50% who dont pay income taxes.

And 240 - lets cut the shit - if he somehow would have managed to get the olympics, you and everyone else around here, and the media, would have been jumping for joy and proclaiming the Obamas as heavyweights, miracle workers, etc.

It cuts both ways.  This failure is solely Obama and Michelle's.  They embarassed themselves completely by making it about them alone and thankfully, they got smacked down.

I didn't want the Olympics in the US and I don't care that they aren't here now. However, the fact that the Obama's overextended themselves like this only to have Chicago rejected in the first go round is an embarrassment.

The fact that he has a 50% approval rating less than one year into a 4 year term is horrible 240-- You seem unable to grasp this concept. With the whole media in the tank for Obama, the GOP brand in bad shape and half the country not paying any taxes-- 50% is a pathetic number for the "messiah" to have.

From where he was when he started to now, his approval numbers have plummeted.

With the whole media in the tank for Obama

FOX is the cable news leader.  They have milions more nightly viewers, where they trash obama nonstop.  Also I think drudge and foxnews.com are some of th top ranked news websites - and I think we all know where they stand.

This has nothing to do with Fox, Palin, Bush...Conservatives..Dr udge or anything else. Barry pleaded his case based on a shitty city to hold an Olympics. That city would have gone bankrupt preping for it. He made it about him, did u not hear his speech and Chewbacca's. He did not make it about America...as usual. He failed again...

Again - you avoid the 900 lb gorilla in the room.  And know, not the First Sasquatch.

The media is not fox news but includes newspapers, cnn, abc, cbs, nbc, NYT, WP, LAT, etc.

240 you are really just completely retarded.

Fox News versus CBS, NBC, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, every single major newspaper with the exception of maybe the New York Post, the daily KOS, the Huffington Post, et. al

The fact that Fox has higher ratings is only indicative of the fact that Americans don't buy the crap spewing from the other various media outlets. In terms of "domination" Fox is a minority of one versus literally dozens of others.

Judicial Watch Obtains Documents Revealing Cost of Barack and Michelle Obama’s Failed Bid...

Complete title: Judicial Watch Obtains Documents Revealing Cost of Barack and Michelle Obama’s Failed Bid to Bring 2016 Olympics to Chicago

Two-Week Trip to Copenhagen Cost Taxpayers in Excess of $467,175

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch, the organization that investigates and fights government corruption, announced today that it has obtained records detailing costs associated with a trip made by President and Mrs. Obama and key members of the administration to Copenhagen, Denmark, for the expressed purpose of securing the 2016 Olympics for the city of Chicago. Expenses for the two-week trip appear to have far exceeded $467,175, in light of the fact that costs associated with the aircrafts ‒ two Boeing 747s and several Air Force cargo planes – have not been made available.
According to the records obtained from the Obama Department of Defense (DOD), President and Mrs. Obama; Secretary Ray LaHood; Secretary Arne Duncan; Senior Advisor and Assistant to the President Valarie Jarrett; and representatives of the White House Office of Olympic, Paralympic, and Youth Sport visited Copenhagen from September 21 through October 3 in an effort to convince members of the International Olympics Committee (IOC) to select Chicago as the location for the 2016 Olympics. The Obama administration ferried dozens of other participants, including supporting staff members, to Copenhagen. However , the DOD has redacted many of their names.

Among the itemized costs associated with the Olympics trip (totaling $467,175):

◦$235,659 Hotel rental for seven “offices” plus transportation and communications (through October 2, 2009)
◦$33,044 Cost of extra day in hotel (October 3, 2009)
◦$129,276 Travel vouchers for hotel, mileage, reimbursed expenses, and flight costs for persons attending
◦$69,196 Flight costs for press
President Obama tapped Valarie Jarrett to serve as his “Olympics Czar” and lead the effort to secure the Olympics for Chicago despite her personal and business ties to Chicago, which included a stint working for Mayor Daley. Jarrett’s work on the Olympics bid would have violated Obama’s own Executive Order against engaging in lobbying activities prior to his administration. However, then-“Ethics Czar” Norm Eisen granted Jarrett an “ethics waver” from the president’s highly-touted ethics pledge so Jarrett could run the push for the Chicago Olympics bid. The waiver exempted Jarrett from the restrictions of President Obama’s own ethics pledge, even though she had personally led the bid before entering the White House.

Judicial Watch obtained the documents pursuant to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request submitted to the DOD on October 5, 2009. FOIA law required the DOD to respond within 20 days. However, the DOD took 26 months to release the records. In September 2009, Judicial Watch submitted an open records request with Chicago Mayor Richard Daley’s to obtain records related to the Olympics bid, and the mayor’s office has failed to respond. Therefore, Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit against the mayor’s office on November 10, 2009 , seeking those records.

“Barack and Michelle Obama wasted taxpayer dollars on a junket that seemed designed for one purpose – to take care of their Chicago cronies who stood to gain financially from the Olympics racket,” says Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “The fact that Valerie Jarrett needed an ‘ethics waiver’ to lead this failed bid to bring the Olympics to Chicago tells you almost all you need to know about the scandalous nature of this trip.”
