Cabin fever has set in at the Capitol, and it seems some members of Congress have completely lost it.
Amid this week's bitter fight over the payroll tax extension, House Republicans revved up for battle by huddling in a Capitol basement and recounting scenes from Braveheart, according to a Washington Post report.
Seriously.
The Post reports that GOP lawmakers hunkered down for more than two hours Monday night, eating chicken sandwiches and taking turns comparing themselves to 13th century Scottish rebels. According to Post columnist Dana Milbank, one member recounted the scene where Mel Gibson/William Wallace orders his men to wait before attacking the English cavalry, prompting the other lawmakers to chant "Hold! Hold! Hold!"
This is disturbing on several levels, not least because it lays bare the absolute partisan rancor that has brought Washington to a standstill.
It is also an unfortunate analogy, if you remember how the movie ends. As White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer pointed out this morning, things don't turn out so good for the Scots.
