. You can still gain muscle on anabolics in a caloric deficit, just not as quickly in a caloric surplus. Only exception would be tren I guess, although I have never tried it, from what I have read it is the only anabolic steroid that actually slows down protein synthesis and decreases protein breakdown hence people gaining muscle late in contest prep. This is why it is not effective without other anabolics when it comes to bulking. Drugs like deca,dbol,testosterone are largely caloric dependent, high levels of insulin, eating lots of protein although not required, will make them work much better than if you dont eat as much.
