Louis Oosthuizen Double Eagle at the Masters
« on: April 08, 2012, 12:01:24 PM »
Holy crap....did anyone catch that? Oostauisen (sp) just did it never.seen anything like that.

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Even if he doesn't have a place in the champion's locker room at the Masters, Louis Oosthuizen can say he has a spot in the Albatross Club with Gene Sarazen.

Not a bad consolation prize: That shot by "The Squire" in 1935, after all, is widely credited with putting the Masters on the map.

Back then, players weren't routinely hitting the ball so far, but Sarazen had the pluck to pull out a 4-wood from 235 yards and blast the ball over the creek that guards the 15th green at Augusta National. He made double eagle, otherwise known as an albatross. It erased a three-shot deficit to Craig Wood in one swing. The two went to a playoff that Sarazen won.

i was really close to getting one a couple years back. short par 4, down hill, wind at my back, drove it up on the green about 5 feet from the pin.

rarest shot in golf.  much more so than a hole-in-one.

i think they said 5 double eagles in 76 years of Masters competition, versus 2 holes in one just today.

edit...  4th ever at the Masters.

Has anyone ever scored a condor in golf?

Yes, it's happened at least several times.
Since almost nobody - even with today's supercharged equipment - can hit a 500-yard drive, the best place to look for par-5 aces are on those par-5 holes that are severe doglegs, or are even a bit horseshoe-shaped. On such holes, an intrepid long-hitter can attempt to cut a corner or clear trees or other hazards in order to go straight at the green, rather than playing around the dogleg in a normal fashion.
Holes-in-one on two such par-5s are known to have happened. One was even recorded with a 3-iron! That one was made by Shaun Lynch, playing at Teign Valley Golf Club in Christow, England, in 1995, on the 496-yard No. 17. According to a 2004 article in Golf World magazine, Lynch aimed straight toward the green on a horseshoe par-5, clearing a 20-foot-high hedge, then hitting a downslope on the other side.
The downslope carried his ball to the green and into the cup.
The first-known ace of this nature occurred in 1962, according to the Golf World article. "Larry Bruce took his drive over a stand of scrawny pines on the 480-yard dogleg right par-5 fifth hole at Hope Country Club" in Arkansas, and found the cup.
But there's also one hole-in-one known to have occurred on a straightaway par-5. This monster drive was achieved at altitude on the No. 9 hole at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver in 2002. The shot was 517 yards in length, and the golfer who got the ace was Mike Crean. This ace is believed to be the longest ever recorded

i do acknowledge the possibility, but most courses with dogleg par 5's that may be potentially driven by a huge hitter have deemed the attempt an illegal shot.  i'm friends with Jason Zuback, 5 time world long drive champion.  we have played on one of the championship courses in our area, and there is one par five that he can reach on occasion.  if it's not a busy day on the course, he will hit 3 or 4 balls off the teebox toward the green. the trouble is, you don't know until you are at the green if you have cleared the trees. and technically, you have to return to the teebox and reload if you can't find it.  so for safety, and pace of play the local rules usually disqualify the shot.

my first meltdown, haha

Yep - watched that last night. Phil would have won the whole thing if he hadn't cocked it up on the third.

Amazing shot by Oosthuizen for the albatross though.

On occasion, whenever I can get out to Connecticut to visit friends, we tend to play a round, weather permitting.

5-6 yrs ago yes, .....now.....nah  He's working on his "image"  ::)

If ANY member of Augusta acted like him, throwing/kicking clubs and screaming curse words, they would most likely have their membership revoked.  That is a fact.
