Has there ever been a debate where the opponents get to ask each other questions?

Like, Romney and Obama (and Ryan and Biden) could each take turns asking each other a total of 10 questions (one at a time of course, w/responses) which would be unknown to their opponent until asked in the debate?

I dont know - but I know the candiidates wouldn't answer the Qs anyway.  They'd just return to stump speeches and gotcha lines.

newt had a cool idea about the series of town hall 3 hours unmoderated debates with obama every week.  Would never happen.

Don't recall that in recent memory for the general election.  Closest would be townhall format where people in the audience get to ask questions.
