Foxcatcher (schmoe)
« on: August 04, 2012, 02:44:51 PM »
Back in April of 2010 I commented on the schometastic episode of heir John duPont who used his family fortune to set up a world class wrestling camp on his private estate.  Many aspiring Olympic and pro wrestlers moved themselves (and their families) onto John’s estate where they could live and train in his exclusive facility.  The only price of admission was they had to “wrestle” with Mr. duPont.  ;)

Lots of guys signed on for this arrangement to mutual satisfaction; it went on for years… but it all came crashing down when duPont murdered wrestler Dave Schultz.  Was it a lover’s quarrel?  A schmoe session gone bad?  Who knows?  duPont was judged a paranoid schizophrenic and sentenced 13-30 years in prison for the murder.  I recall news reports about this back in the late 1990s and at the time I remember thinking that it sounded schmoetastic—except for the way it all ended.

There was a huge gay subtext to this story that was never discussed or aired in public.  All of those wrestlers going off to live at this guy’s training camp for months/years at a time...?  Presumably most of them were straight; many like, Dave Shultz, were married yet they were willing to go off and live with this guy for years and “wrestle” with him while he paid their bills?  Did their families think this was unusual?  On the up and up?  Did they even imagine that anything untoward was going on?  Did they know it was all a cover for this duPont to get his jollies and simply accepted that?  Is some version of this common in wrestling?  Call me a conspiracy theorist but I will never believe that it was all innocent, hetero, or asexual.  The last time I brought this up, I ended by saying “There is a story here waiting to be told...”

Now, it appears that story will be told in a new film called Foxcatcher!  Steve Carell will pay John DuPont; Mark Ruffalo will play Dave Schultz.

Stay tuned...

Weird story to make a movie of, and with Steven Carrell to boot.

I recall this new story and always thought it very schmoe; and in a repulsive way.   I can't see Carrell playing a dramatic villain, nor Ruffalo playing Schultz since in the movie The Kids Are Alright Ruffalo was about as buffed as a chocolate eclair.  Sounds like a dreadful movie.

But, it all raises an interesting thought.  What if, what if there was a billionaire bodybuilding schmoe who built a state-of-the-art gym on his estate, had a full-time staff of a top trainer, a nutritionist, a chef, an MD who specialized in AAS and hormones, and a couple of PhD biochemists who did research in hormones, and offered bodybuilders free access to the gym, free lodging, free food, and free top grade gear.  How many aspiring bodybuilders would flock to him?  And of those, just how many would be willing to "pay his price?"  And wonder what kind of bodybuilders he would turn out?

Literally dozens--make that hundreds!  We've seen plenty of evidence that wannabes are willing to do it all for a whole lot less so certainly they would do it all for the scenario you describe. :-[
