'Black box' standards coming for cars

The federal standards will apply only to cars that are voluntarily outfitted with event data recorders (EDRs), also known as black boxes. But while the government does not yet require all cars to have black boxes installed, NHTSA is still thought to be considering a federal mandate as a next step, possibly this year.

I'd give it a week before some hacker has figured out a way to disable them and posted it all over the automotive boards. Then the federal government will get mad and stomp their feet because the peons aren't respecting their "authoritah" and messing with their pretty black boxes that they spent so much time forcing on us. Then they will come back with some over the top draconian response, where hacking the pretty black box (which is part of something YOU own) is a felony with a mandatory ten year prison sentance. Anyway, how the hell are we letting this happen? This is the 1st time i've even heard of this shit that I can remember, seems so fucking wrong..... How long until its mandatory that ALL vehicles be retrofitted, and then how long until Government agencies will start using them as a way to track and identify possible criminal activity with them? Until they monitor how fast we're driving?

took a database course not to long ago and it really opened my eyes to the severity of some of this shit.

You know how some police cars have a camera on it that scans license plates as the go down the street?

supposedly these are being stored in a database along with GPS coordinates and time stamps. If there is a crime in the area they can look at any data they have as to what vehicles where in the area at the time. If they are looking for someone they can see where the last place the vehicle was spotted per the database.

Think about this...

RFID tags are cheap and small, placing one in the registration sticker of a vehicle along with scanners at every stop light will provide a database that ppl can drill into to find REALTIME data on where vehicles are, direction, speed.

Heres another one supposedly the govt has mandated that every cell phone be equiped with GPS capablities to help emergency responders in the case of 911 calls that are interupted or disconnected.

Apparently the DHS also has access to that database

When you think about the possibilities of the technology out there now let alone in 10-20 years it really is scary as shit man.

we focused mainly on access since alot of smaller businesses use it, from what Im told it isnt that bad of a transition from access to sql but I saw some of the sql shit and it doesnt seem anywhere as intuitive as access.

LOL the company I work for grew exponentially over the last 3-4 years and they had access for alot of their ish, doesnt work very well now that there are so many users and so much data but I can see how for a smaller company it would be very useful.

access is a relational database, not sure if youre referring to something else but they tables are relational

I guess I'm thinking more about OLAP cubes in relational databases, but neither here nor there... I have never used access to be honest, so the last time I used it, it was not... That was many many years ago... It very well may have numerous improvements by now.

Oracle, MySQL, MSSQL, that's about it... Oh... I did mess with postgreSQL for a bit as well.
