Democrats have continued to push for the passage of a standalone middle-income tax cut, but Boehner compared their desire to decouple the tax rates for most Americans from those of the top 2 percent to a Christmas fantasy.

Quote
Boehner has faced mounting pressure from both sides as budget talks push closer to the looming Dec. 31 deadline, but the speaker of the House denied that he is stalling on a deal until after his reelection -- a theory floated in recent days by a number of leading Democrats. "I'm not concerned about my job as speaker," he said.
Quote
"We sent the bill to him months ago that will protect 98 percent of American families, and yet he won't call it on the floor? What is he waiting for?” said Sen. Dick Durbin

Quote
“Last week we went out on Wednesday morning. This week we’ll probably go out on Thursday morning after coming in on Tuesday,” Pelosi said. “Two two-day work weeks in a row. This is just not right.”

Maybe Boehner's just looking out for his constituency? Surely, they support him?

Now look at the House speaker’s numbers: Some 49 percent disapprove of his performance, with only 25 percent giving a thumbs up.

Separately, a Bloomberg poll says Americans believe by a 2-to-1 majority that the election results were an endorsement of Obama’s promise to protect Medicare and Social Security benefits—and nearly half the Republicans surveyed say he has a mandate to raise taxes on the wealthy.

I like this.

The GOP shows its true colors.

They are willing to kill the middleclass to satisfy their donors.

So compromise means agreeing with the opposition?

Didn't they give him a proposal that achieved the spending cuts and revenue increases he asked for?  This really is about the president wanting to raise taxes on higher income earners.

The thread title is sarcastic response to another thread in which Tony McTone's displays a complete misunderstanding of why things are happening the way they are happening.  I don't believe the situation warrants Obama compromising and the quotes I pasted are a big part of the reason why.

However, in answer to your question, Obama has made no secret about the fact that he wants those tax cuts dropped. The proposal I think you're talking about was rejected because the tax revenue it would allegedly generate is not accounted for after 2013.

Understood.  I didn't read the other thread you're talking about.

The president has made no secret about raising taxes.  You're right about that.  He ran on that platform and won.  And elections have consequences.
