Alabama gunman shoots bus driver and takes 6 year old hostage
« on: January 31, 2013, 01:50:07 AM »
"MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (KABC) -- An Alabama man who killed a school bus driver and kidnapped a 6-year-old student is still holding that child hostage Wednesday, more than 24 hours after the incident.
Police have made contact with the boy, and they believe he's unharmed.

Authorities say the suspect, identified as 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes, boarded the bus just after 3:30 p.m. local time Tuesday while some children were being dropped off in the small town of Midland City. A girl who was on the bus told ABC News Radio that the man handed the driver a note.

"And then I don't know what happened after that but he started telling them he needed a kid because of the law coming after him," she said.

Dykes then shot the driver, grabbed the child and fled. The suspect and the boy are in an underground bunker behind his home."

The solution to this seems obvious, bus driver should have been armed, 6 year old students should be armed. Simples!

I know you are trying to be ironically witty, but in fact you are right in spite of yourself.

Based on that story, the bus driver could have used a small arms weapon on him as soon as he started talking shit.

Exactly.
Not being ironic, just logical and rational. But...the kid should have been armed too, if somehow the gunman got past the armed driver, the kid should have been in a position to protect himself.
