"The Base" hardly exists anymore. That's to be expected -- world superpowers usually achieve their goals if they try hard enough. Now I hope we think long term and take some steps to prevent any future blowback, probably by developing a modicum of energy independence so that we can decouple ourselves from Middle Eastern affairs almost entirely.
