BitTorrent question.
« on: April 03, 2013, 06:20:23 AM »
If I have a BitTorrent download client, and I spend several hours uploading files to others, while not downloading, will this make me able to download faster when I later want to download a file?

No not really because download speed is based on how many seeders (uploaders) there are for the files you're downloading

Only if you try to download the same file you uploaded- you would have increased the amoutn of seeders.

No. I do not believe so.

But if you tamper with the settings and don't upload at all, I don't know if it has an effect on decreasing your download time.

It does matter in the sense that some sites actually keep track of ratios, make you up stuff to catch up, suspend you, etc.

I was going to point this out too. Don't be a leacher. It mostly boils down to the amount of seeds but don't forget to spread it around. 8)

What others said. I try for a ratio of 1:1. So I upload exactly what I download. I grab everything from TPB or Isohunt so it doesn't really matter if I do or don't, but some private sites will moan at you.

There are some exclusive sites that won't let you download at all if you don't maintain a 1:1 ratio, but if you pay a reasonable monthly fee they'll let you download as much as you want without having to worry about uploading!

But really, my limit is like 250 GB a month and I never get close. Why pay instead of using what you are already paying for and don't necessarily need most of the time?

I always kept my old tower on 24/7. I would just go to work and let it run all day. Then if I wanted something quick without upping, I was so far ahead it didn't matter, would just kill it. It's sort of the spirit of bittorrent IMO.

i think most people worry about uploading for security purposes, some believe if you are ever caught by the law, you get in less trouble if you're only downloading - not uploading!

I dunno how true that is though!

You're probably more vulnerable to prosecution if you're staying online uploading stuff.

That is a very valid point. Honestly, I was always a heavy porn trader on the old Pure TNA. R.I.P.  I don't even do much anymore, if so music, and I can hit that right back to a good ratio quick. I wouldn't advise trying to get tons of actual movies, but that is just me.

I've turned away from the hardcore, fast paced, sordid, and dark life of torrenting ;D  and now I only do things the legal way!

Its was a hard transition because its soooooooooooo easy to get everything and anything illegally...  But I've been successfully leading an honest boring schmuck life for quite some time now and its overrun by Netflix, Amazon Instant, Google Play, Gamestop, and my cable provider's ON-Demand ;D

I'm out and Nobody is pulling me back in again!

Yes nothing says good intentions, like spreading around stolen illegal content.  ::)

I never seed, unless it's something I genuinely want to be out there like language learning material.

THE best.  I get all my stuff from there.  The thing with torrents is that when you get them seeded from places like IP, you will also get it from people who's upload speed is VERY fast.  I get an episode of Spartacus (HD x264 version) in like 6 mins.

Don't hit and run fags!

ACH.  So, if someone burned you a BluRay copy of your favorite movie you would say "no thanks, I want to go buy it".  Also, when it comes to TV shows..I do not see how it is stealing or robbing anyone of things.

I use Tixati and I put the program on "auto limit" distribution settings between upload and download. It works pretty good.
Thanks for all your replies, guys.
