Years ago there was an interesting long term study in Kenya done on Baboons, the troupe was run by some really aggressive, belligerent alphas at the top of the hierarchy and a bunch of sickly stressed out subordinates below them (the constantly stressed out subordinates was attributed to the violent atmosphere created by the violent Alphas at the top).  The alphas always were able to fight of any competition and get fresh picking at the food dumps where they regularly scavenged from.  This pattern remained constant for twenty years, but one year there was some meat tainted with bovine tuberculosis at the food dump and the Alphas who regularly dominated ate the tainted meat and died soon after.  

With no more alphas left, those left behind in the troop, were the 50 percent of males that had been too subordinate to try dump brawling, as well as all the females and their young. With that change in demographics came a cultural swing toward pacifism, a relaxing of the usually parlous baboon hierarchy, and a willingness to use affection and mutual grooming rather than threats, swipes and bites to foster a patriotic spirit.  The removal of aggressive alpha males actually led to a more civilised baboon troupe, less violence and more co-operation and less stress for everyone.
