I think even at that level it comes down to having common personal interests. Bush was alfa-like; taking off from aircraft carrier, having ran a sports team, boasting military etc. That's kind of stuff Putin enjoys too.
Obama on the other hand is completely different.
He seemed to get along well with Medvedev though, who was a liberal pussycat who enjoys opera and that kind of shit.
