Deacon Jones, a Pro Football Hall of Famer considered by many to be one of the greatest defensive ends of all time, has died at the age of 74, according to Redskins general manager Bruce Allen.

Deacon Jones will be missed. Truly one of the greats.

He actually coined the word "sack". According to him (and he was known for hyperbole), he said he did it because he needed to give newspaper writers a reason to put his name in the papers. And there just wasn't a name for doing what he did well...knocking down the QB. So came up with the word "sack" for the act, because according to him, it was easy to write, remember and say, and just sounded great.

Him and Merlin Olsen...devastating front line combo on those LA Rams teams.

thanks to nfl films they tracked his sacks which weren't an official stat at the time he had like 27 one year and 25 another in a 14 game season. gastineau,strahan who?
