Genetics play a role for sure.  But in the end smoking always catches up with someone.  As a smoker ages they develope lines around their mouth and eyes that a non smoker does not get.

My cousin is as white as they come, she has strawberry blond hair and she's covered with freckles. She runs and works out and has the same great body she had when she was a teenager. Most guys get soft and pudgy at 50.  If you are lean is really becomes a drastic difference because it really is out of the norm. I know most guys who are 30 in the gym think they will be ripped and muscular at 50 have no clue unless they plan on using steroids and growth hormone.

i'm not sure which gym you train in, but in most of the gyms i've ever trained in the vast majority of fellas training there were average at best
