Microsoft's next game console, the Xbox One, is perhaps best known for its complex used game system and once-per-24-hour online check-in requirement. Today, Microsoft is rolling back those policies, and the company took to its Xbox blog to explain. "I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360," Xbox head Don Mattrick writes. He then states:

"An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360. Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360."

Mattrick further explains that this is a direct response to gamer outcry. "Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One," he says. Further, he confirms that Xbox One games will be region-free, and that disc-based games will have to be kept in the disc tray rather than ripped to the console and played digitally (a previously touted Xbox One feature).

Though the One's down a couple features -- Mattrick specifically says, "These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One" -- it sounds like gamers won this round.

Without the Internet it would never have been stopped, just goes to show the power we have today if we geeks get together

I have this vision of Ballmer shoving the GM of XBox's head through a wall.

MS turned the switch back to "ON" for this fight. I would absolutely LOVE to see the numbers they were eye balling to be convinced to go back on this though. I might actually play Forza 5 for this new generation of consoles now, this makes me happy. They still have to convince people to buy over the PS4 still, seeing as how their's is coming in 100$ higher and with forced Kinect. If I was more into MS's exclusives I'd be preordering not only the PS4, but possibly this. They hurt themselves pretty bad regardless though, this whole DRM/always on debacle still cost them sales I'm sure. MS realized the war WAS over if they didn't do a 180. That says a lot.

Hell yeah. I saw the article and went back to a buddy and said "The internet won today." and explained why.

Its so funny - they kept saying "yeah we conducted many consumer surveys and interviews, and we are confident in what we are doing"

Who the fuck did you interview?  Other microsoft employees maybe? lol

Their investors.  ;D Regardless of where they stand on their system now, this whole thing doesn't really make me want to give MS my money any more. It's pretty obvious what direction as a company they are headed, or trying to go to anyways. Time to stop making excuses and install some Linux.

Who's putting out physics based sports games?  I could give a shit about the DRM policy.  When are the next generation of consoles due, because I won't be buying these two either?

Why do you feel it's necessary to clog every video game thread on this site with this statement?

We get it - you know a little about the physics engine that EA uses, and you don't like it.   Put it in your fucking signature or something instead of posting it ad naseum.  Nobody gives a shit.

My 10 year old son is pretty savvy with windows, but I really wanted him to learn some Linux, so when I installed a Minecraft server in the house, I put it on Ubuntu server. Then I started teaching him the commands he needs to administer it. He can use vi and do basic commands. He did have a good geek joke when he was trying to convince his mother to let him stay up later:

Mom: "go to bed"
Son: "I want to stay up"
Mom: "no"
Son: "sudo I want to stay up"

Needless to say, it didnt work. He was just channeling XKCD.

hahaha you can all thank the hive mentality on reddit for that, they've been laying into Microsoft for the past few weeks now, it got so bad Microsoft hired companies to leave specific positive feedback on reddit (which was observed by a visitor to the Microsoft building and promptly reported by him).
Its fascinating how even supertanker size companies like Microsoft buckle under the pressure of massive online community like reddit these days.

How you can work for years on a new console (which will sell to millions) and not bother to consult a large panel of your potential customers about radical changes is mindblowing???

Then shortly after releasing it, realise you're totally out of touch with what people want and do an embarrasing backtrack to save face.

Classic stuff here.  They would have been fucked, if they didn't change it back.  They realized this and were smart enough to unfuck themselves. You will have a few who are irritated enough to write them off entirely. I was going with ps4, but will switch back now. $100 more for a better OS is ok for me. Figure out is many hours you'll use that, divide into $100... You'll end up paying 3 cents more per hour.  Hardly a deciding factor.
The DRM bullshit, was a deal breaker though. Always online, not so much. Everything is going digital eventually, so what does it matter.  They should have seen that initially and consulted the Croatch.

yeah, this changes things. I was sold on the ps4. But removed restrictions, better online gameplay history,  and only one gold account need per machine. Damn so hard too choose.

Review got me a bit excited. And that's from a pre-alpha. Especially "The planting of feet and the distribution of weight is amazing." Will probably wait to buy a console until thats is released and get reviews.

Hopefully they do another fight night also. I cant imagine what that will look and feel like considiring how insane it looks on this old ass hardware.
