Officials in the Franklin Township school district in Somerset County removed Madhumita Chaki from her tenured job in 2011.
During a chemistry class in 2010, court documents indicate,
she characterized blacks as lazy, and Asians as intellectually and economically superior. She also said whites could no longer afford to live in New Jersey and Spanish people were working class.
An administrative law judge recommended that Chaki, who is Asian, keep her job. But the appeals court sided with the acting state education commissioner to dismiss her.
Chaki’s lawyer said his client was discussing demographics to make a chemistry point and never intended for her comments to sound demeaning.
