I'm firearms proficient but I'm out of practice and wasn't a great shot anyway... Should I pick up a 22 to polish my fundamentals? Or just practice with what I got?

What do you have? If all you have is a .338 Lapua, you might want to consider something cheaper to shoot.

What are your goals? Just improving your aim for hunting?,or do you want to compete?

The best idea is to get a solid rifle and just focus on the fundamentals..... breathing, proper sight picture, proper bone alignment.... etc...

HUH?!

You practice with what you want to shoot regularly.

If you want to shoot a .22 at home invaders determined to hogtie your entire family, jam socks in their mouths, wrap a yard of duct tape atop that, THEN steal all of your valuables ... then, yes -- absolutely, YES!:  shoot at those thugs with a peagun 22.

Otherwise, you might meet them with a Beretta or H&K 9mm with a 15 round mag.  If you're savvy, you might have a .45 in reserve, like a classic 1911.

Becoming proficient with effective firearms isn't cheap, or easy ... you'd best heed my advice then quickly search out a local gun club and find someone at least vaguely like-minded.

I'm not a huge Taurus fan, and I've been eyeing up S&W's version, the Governor.

Good Call. Taurus has had some serious quality issues, but have the best warranty in the business.  I'd switch everything over to S&W if I were able.

Is the Taurus a .44 Mag or a .454 Casull because it can't be both. There is a world of difference between those two rounds.

I have a lot of guns. I don't know how many. I have a couple of spiral binders with all of the serial numbers but I haven't counted up them in years.

It would need two cylinders and two barrels, but OK. The .44 Mag and the .44 Special can be fired from the same gun. As can the .454 Casull and the .45 Long Colt.

If you shoot 1911 or AR you can get a .22 conversion to stay within the feel and controls of the platform. Obviously the recoil will be different.

Otherwise I'd say just go with an XD or Glock in 9mm. If it's about money the 9mm economy is impossible to beat in a handgun.

The days of cheap high power rifle rounds are likely over. The 454 casull is a lot more round than the 44 mag. The 45 long colts are plinkers in comparison.

700 Nitro express, 460 Weatherby mag, H&H 8 gauge, 416 Rigby are all good for home defense

Sure.  Can't hurt.  Buy a brick of ammo too.
