A new Reuters/Ipsos poll has finally found something that Americans like even less than Congress: the possibility of U.S. military intervention in Syria. Only 9 percent of respondents said that the Obama administration should intervene militarily in Syria; a RealClearPolitics poll average finds Congress has a 15 percent approval rating, making the country’s most hated political body almost twice as popular.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was taken Aug.19-23, the very same week that horrific reports emerged strongly suggesting that Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad has used chemical weapons against his own people, potentially killing hundreds or even thousands of civilians. If there were ever a time that Americans would support some sort of action, you’d think this would be it. But this is the lowest support for intervention since the poll began tracking opinion on the issue. The survey also found that 60 percent oppose intervention outright, with the rest, perhaps sagely, saying that they don’t know.

I'm sure probably 75% of Americans prefer watching American Idol to FOX news.  Does that make it right?

I'm sure the majority of america once supported a lot of things that weren't right in retrospect.

if it was right to invade saddam, then it is MORE than right to bomb the crap out of Syria.  Anyone who supprorted the iraq war due to the "potential of WMD" needs to suck it up and wear their "I support obama's 3rd war" t-shirt to the beach tomorrow.

I don't get this fascination with polls... what does it matter what most Americans think about Congress, Obama, etc? We live in a Republic, not a democracy – and certainly not in a direct democracy. The only poll that matters is the election.

That's just stupid... Just because someone supported the Iraq war on the grounds of the presence of WMD doesn't mean that he would need to support an invasion of or war against Syria for the same reason.

This sort of simplistic argument of is just dumb.

Are there legitimate arguments to be made for intervening in Syria? Sure. Are there legitimate arguments to be made for not intervening in Syria? Sure.

Iraq qua WMD isn't one of those legitimate arguments.

See, I don't understand why.   People were screaming "We need to attack iraq because they may have WMD soon!"

Well, this is another anti-american nation, and there's no doubt they have them, they have used them, and the killing was a horrible thing.

I'm just looking for consistency here... Can we pick and choose which countries blasting people with WMD we want to invade?  I dont think we can, morally.

well elected doughebags are certainly happy enough to use polls when it makes their case, nothing wrong with pointing out when the people are against something...  Of course it doesn't matter in the sense that the poll has any kind of authority but it will matter to them if they ask a massive sacrifice over something almost nobody supports.  Hell even the president does his own polling all the time.  He and past presidents wouldn't be doing that if it didn't mean anything.

We can do whatever we want. The military is broke....Obama pulled us out of Iraq before we were done so you can now call that a lose or a waste. He didn't do anything of value in Afghanistan except get people killed with his PC war there.  It was only a "good" war to him because NATO was heavily involved and he wanted to suck up to both Europe and the muslim world. Nobody cares about syrians gassing syrians....gas away...gas kids...gas women..gas gas fucking gas. If the arabs want to kill each other..please have at it.  The ONLY reason to go in is if for some reason Israel is attacked. They will retaliate and cause a shitstorm that Obama will have to deal with. Nothing good comes of this.
