Need your help - Serious question
« on: September 18, 2013, 07:53:36 AM »
Today I was doing BB Rows with grip like curl (very very strict form).
Very heavy (at least for me) 5 to 6 reps.

After un hour or so after the workout I started feeling pain in my right bicep, and it's getting worse by the hour (at the moment I can't curl it properly).

Do you ever experienced something similar?
No pain during the workout.

Maybe it's because of the barbell?

Thanks in advance for your opinions and fell free to troll (but not too much).

strained a tendon.  When warm and full of blood you typically won't feel it, it's when your arm cools down and the tendon starts to tighten up is when it hurts.  Put some ICE on it.  It should help.

That inner tendon gets really strained with certian curling movements. I'd say drop the barbell curls or at least curl with the ez bar.

Might be a very partial tear from not being use to the grip, etc.... If there isn't any bad bruising, visible damage to the bicep, etc... , just rest it and it will be fine.

All of the above are probably correct.

Ice the shit out of it, stretch, take anti inflammatory meds, then rest for a few days.

I stopped doing them like this a while ago, hurts the hell out of my wrists.

Dorian did them like this though and he was a very strong man.

Dorian tore his bicep doing curl grip rows. I think he tore the muscle and not the tendon but who knows? He went to using a pronated grip after. I think because of the amount of weight used and the position of the bicep makes it a risky exercise.

If your bicep continues to hurt or it looks misshapen see an orthopedic surgeon who will order an MRI. A partial tear of the tendon runs the risk of becoming a complete tear. Recovery I hear from a partial tear operation is quick. A complete tear from it's distal attachment is a long time. It happened to me. My bicep was rolled up to my shoulder. It came completely off. I had an MRI but the doc said by looking at my arm anyone can see what happened without it.

I suggest you perform them with a pronated grip or, even better, choose dumbbell rows.

I really would like to thank you all for the suggestions and help.

During the evening (I really can't explain why) the pain "went down" to the forearm and no more in the bicep.
This morning the forearm/bicep is 70% ok but the real pain is in the high lat (near the spine) always on the right side.
Very strange, never happened to me.

In any case it seems that performing heavy barbell exercises is only hurting me as I grow old.
Maybe it's time to switch and go for DB only.

Thanks again to all of you guys.
