Former Major League Baseball player Jim Leyritz was arrested Friday on charges of driving under the influence and killing another driver after his vehicle crashed into hers.

Leyritz, who turned 44 on Thursday, faces charges of DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage, said Detective Kathy Collins, Fort Lauderdale police spokeswoman.

The penalties for DUI should be far worse than the outrageous sentences we give for possession of other drugs.

You drink, you drive, you kill someone...that's MURDER, not 'manslaughter'.

Meanwhile, Andy Pettitte taking a little HGH is now a federal case.

just last week here in Indianapolis, a cop pulled over a Principle of a local High school for DUI. He had the dashboard camera on too. The guy blew a .18 I think, which is more than double the legal limit...he failed EVERY one of the roadside tests I think, and guess what...HE WASN'T ARRESTED!! The cop drove him home. The guy made a call to someone at the police station that he knew is what I heard..I didn't watch the entire clip, but it was on the news. Utter bullshit I say...they never took me home..they took me straight to jail.( as they should have)

this really pisses me off. if you watch it around the 14 minute mark, the cop is offering to take him home, but he is trying to find someone else to get him so his wife doesn't find out...bull shit. He knew the cop and the cop aknowledges this on video.

I can't believe that the politicians give honest, law-abiding citizens zero support on this issue.

If you don't mind, please track that case for us and keep us updated on the outcome. At a minimum, he should lose his job and lose his license for at least a year.

What makes them look like complete fools is the fact that lately they have really been preaching in the media about how they are "CRACKING DOWN" on drunk driving. Commercials on tv/ radio etc. "Operation Pull Over" or something.

The problem with DUI laws is they still do not stop the worst offenders (a.k.a. the ones who drive stupidly drunk). No matter how many times these men and women are arrested they will continue to drink and drive, and at 2.0 levels.

We need to stop pretending busting some college kid for .08 is making us safer. Hell, if they really wanted to make us safe the would just put the cops right outside the bars and stop everyone coming out for a quick blow test.

The guy blew a .18 that is extremely intoxicated.More than double legal limit. If you really think ANYONE can drive safely after 3 beers, then you are fooling yourself. If you are buzzing at all, you are impaired. Maybe not shit faced drunk..but impaired either way. You shouldn't have to "fuck up and kill somebody" to go to jail. It is too late then. If you arrest and throw the book at people driving at .08 or whatever, then you teach them a lesson before they kill somebody...not after.

Congress is after the high-profile professional baseball players who are committing victimless crimes, yet no one is going after the bastards who are endangering and killing REAL people on our streets and highways.

The penalties should be swift, severe, well-publicized, and non-appealable.

yep. I agree.I am 33 almost 34 and I haven't drank a drop in 8 years, but when I was younger, I was arrested for DUI two times in 3 years. The first time I was 22 the second time 25. I am not proud of that, but it happened and I learned from it. I wish I would have learned after the first time, but I didn't.They didn't do anything to me the first time...6 months probation and lost my license for 30 days. That's it. The second time was a different story.I still got off relatively easy...but it woke me up.I realised that I had a problem and I dealt with it. I was in jail with a guy who had been arrested 8 times in something like 12 years!! 8 TIMES!! If they had ever done anything to him that amounted to anything, MAYBE he wouldn't have been in that boat. Same with me..If they had locked me up for awhile the first time..there never would have been a second. I am thankfull that I never hurt or killed anyone.
They talk a good talk about cracking down, and they do on some people...but not a High School Principle that knew the Cop. If you watched that clip the guy was laughing..he thought it was no big deal. The officer might have felt he was helping the guy out,..doing him a favor. I disagree. If he wanted to do him a favor he would teach him a lesson NOW before he kills someone...and I gaurentee you if he gets off Scott free on this, he will continue to do it. Why wouldn't he?

murder is an intentional act ie the perpetrator must intend to kill the victim or at least a probable consequence of his actions..

being drunk doesn't preclude intent but it doesn't prove it either ie person doesn't nromally drink and drive in order to kill someone, but by being drunk while driving and thus causing a crash resulting in death, it is not hard to prove that the killing of the victim was unlawful.

There are no fail safe ways. But I know one way that WON'T HELP..and that's the COPS driving someone home that has just blew more than double the legal limit just because he is "important". That guy should have been arrested and processed the same as you or I would have been. In Indiana everyone that is arrested for DUI has to go to a victim impact panel. That is a miserable feeling that really makes you think.

There's some interesting statistics at the link below. Nice to know that "Most Americans drink alcohol. Over 80% admit to driving after drinking"!!!!!!!!!

will do. I don't know exactly how the media got hold of that tape, but there has been such a fuss raised over it, the prosecutor is looking into it. But you know..there should be no "looking into it." Laws should apply to everyone not just "common people"

hmmm, how many people die on roads as a result of roids and driving? ...

yet we imprison guys with roids in their possession but let people go out and get drunk with absolutely zero control over whether they proceed to go ahead and drive 100mph head on into a family of 6...
