The guy enabled bad memories to manifest themself as everything he became...guy couldn't rise above it and literally lived inside his own fairy tale to try and enable and justify his behaviour... There is a whole planet full of suffering...he knew he had other choices to try and combat his mental issues, maybe he tried them and didn't persist, but he chose to become a parody of himself, drugs and innocence being his poison.
