A magnetic filament of solar material erupted on the sun in late September, breaking the quiet conditions in a spectacular fashion. The 200,000 mile long filament ripped through the sun's atmosphere, the corona, leaving behind what looks like a canyon of fire. The glowing canyon traces the channel where magnetic fields held the filament aloft before the explosion. Visualizers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. combined two days of satellite data to create a short movie of this gigantic event on the sun.

Luckily for us, it is safely placed 93 million miles away.

“We could see it go supernova anywhere from tomorrow to 500,000 years from now,” said Grant Hill, an astronomer at the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii. “For all intents and purposes, the gamma-ray burst and optical photons from the supernova would arrive simultaneously.”

About that time I spent a good hour or two staring directly at the sun thinking that I was puttin out a distress signal to angels. I was able to, after awhile, focus and through widening my eyes make the sun expand quite dramatically (in my own perception at least, a physical expansion of the sun). I got extremely worried that I was going to cause the star to burst immediately afterward.  Maybe I caused that event to happen!! ( although maybe I shouldn't be happy about it?)

  also, there was a massive "coronal" hole in the sun back in May that was under reported in the news. A giant black hole in the sun that took up about a quarter of its surface if I remember correctly. Pretty ominous stuff.
