There's definitely a transition into becoming more conscious of other people's thoughts, emotions and needs.

Sometimes it is vital to be in tune with others as opposed to only focusing on ourselves. For many, this comes as we age and experience more facets of the human experience, good and bad.

I don't now about reading other peoples thoughts, but we can become more intuitive based on experience.  For example a child care worker after 20 years of working with children intuitively anticipates children doing certain things that someone with no childcare experience would be able too.
