Three fizzy drinks per day could triple chance of heart disease

Strong association between the proportion of daily calories from sugar-laden foods and death rates from cardiovascular disease, report finds

Around a tenth of adults obtained a quarter or more of their calories from added sugar

Drinking just three cans of fizzy pop each day could triple your chance of developing heart disease, a study has suggested.

Scientists in America found a strong association between the proportion of daily calories from foods laden with added sugars - rather than those that occur naturally - and death rates from cardiovascular disease.

For people who take on a quarter of their calories each day from the sugars common in sticky drinks, sweets and desserts, the researchers found the risk tripled compared to those whose sugar contribution was less than 10 per cent.

Dietary guidelines from the World Health Organisation recommend added sugar should make up less than a tenth of total calorie intake, yet many processed foods and beverages are packed with sugar.

In Britain the average adult between 19 and 65 takes on 1,882 calories per day, according to the The Health and Social Care Information Centre, so three cans of fizzy drinks each containing 140 of added sugar would amount to around a quarter.

The new study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, used American national health survey data to determine how much added sugar people were consuming. Between 2005 and 2010 it accounted for at least 10 per cent of the calories consumed by more than 70 per cent of the US population, the research showed.

Around a tenth of adults obtained a quarter or more of their calories from added sugar.

The information was matched against heart disease mortality over a typical period of 14.6 years, during which a total of 831 cardiovascular deaths were recorded.

Professor Naveed Satta from the British Heart Foundation Glasgow Cardiovascular Research Centre at the University of Glasgow said: "We have known for years about the dangers of excess saturated fat intake, an observation which led the food industry to replace unhealthy fats with presumed 'healthier' sugars in many food products.

"However, the present study, perhaps more strongly than previous ones, suggests that those whose diet is high in added sugars may also have an increased risk of heart attack. Of course, sugar per se is not harmful - we need it for the body's energy needs - but when consumed in excess it will contribute to weight gain and, in turn, may accelerate heart disease."

Dr Nita Forouhi from the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit at Cambridge University, called for "clear front of pack labelling of sugar content" to help consumers buying food products.

"While policy makers deliberate on the pros and cons of a sugary drinks tax, there is a public health action less talked about: a health warning on soft drinks with high sugar content, recommending to limit consumption as part of a healthy diet," she said.

The study showed that the average proportion of daily calories obtained from added sugar rose from 15.7 per cent in 1988-1994 to 16.8 per cent in 1999-2004. It decreased to 14.9 per cent in 2005-2010.

Too much sugar linked to fatal heart disease, even in those who are not obese

A 32-ounce soda is filled at a McDonald's in New York City, Sept. 13, 2012.

Could too much sugar be deadly? The biggest study of its kind suggests the answer is yes, at least when it comes to fatal heart problems.

It doesn't take all that much extra sugar, hidden in many processed foods, to substantially raise the risk, the researchers found, and most Americans eat more than the safest amount.

Having a cinnamon roll with your morning coffee, a super-sized sugary soda at lunch and a scoop of ice cream after dinner would put you in the highest risk category in the study. That means your chance of dying prematurely from heart problems is nearly three times greater than for people who eat only foods with little added sugar.

For someone who normally eats 2,000 calories daily, even consuming two 12-ounce cans of soda substantially increases the risk. For most American adults, sodas and other sugary drinks are the main source of added sugar.

Lead author Quanhe Yang of the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention called the results sobering and said it's the first nationally representative study to examine the issue.

Scientists aren't certain exactly how sugar may contribute to deadly heart problems, but it has been shown to increase blood pressure and levels of unhealthy cholesterol and triglycerides; and also may increase signs of inflammation linked with heart disease, said Rachel Johnson, head of the American Heart Association's nutrition committee and a University of Vermont nutrition professor.

Yang and colleagues analyzed national health surveys between 1988 and 2010 that included questions about people's diets. The authors used national death data to calculate risks of dying during 15 years of follow-up.

Overall, more than 30,000 American adults aged 44 on average were involved.

Previous studies have linked diets high in sugar with increased risks for non-fatal heart problems, and with obesity, which can also lead to heart trouble. But in the new study, obesity didn't explain the link between sugary diets and death. That link was found even in normal-weight people who ate lots of added sugar.

"Too much sugar does not just make us fat; it can also make us sick," said Laura Schmidt, a health policy specialist at the University of California, San Francisco. She wrote an editorial accompanying the study in Monday's JAMA Internal Medicine.

The researchers focused on sugar added to processed foods or drinks, or sprinkled in coffee or cereal. Even foods that don't taste sweet have added sugar, including many brands of packaged bread, tomato sauce and salad dressing. Naturally occurring sugar, in fruit and some other foods, wasn't counted.

Most health experts agree that too much sugar isn't healthy, but there is no universal consensus on how much is too much.

U.S government dietary guidelines issued in 2010 say "empty" calories including those from added sugars should account for no more than 15 percent of total daily calories.

The average number of daily calories from added sugar among U.S. adults was about 15 percent toward the end of the study, slightly lower than in previous years.

The authors divided participants into five categories based on sugar intake, from less than 10 percent of daily calories - the safest amount - to more than 25 percent.

Most adults exceed the safest level; and for 1 in 10 adults, added sugar accounts for at least 25 percent of daily calories, the researchers said.

The researchers had death data on almost 12,000 adults, including 831 who died from heart disease during the 15-year follow-up. They took into account other factors known to contribute to heart problems, including smoking, inactivity and excess weight, and still found risks for sugar.

As sugar intake increased, risks climbed steeply.

Adults who got at least 25 percent of their calories from added sugar were almost three times more likely to die of heart problems than those who consumed the least - less than 10 percent.

For those who got more than 15 percent - or the equivalent of about two cans of sugary soda out of 2,000 calories daily - the risk was almost 20 percent higher than the safest level.

Sugar calories quickly add up: One teaspoon has about 16 calories; one 12-ounce can of non-diet soda contains has about 9 teaspoons of sugar or about 140 calories; many cinnamon rolls have about 13 teaspoons of sugar; one scoop of chocolate ice cream has about 5 teaspoons of sugar.

Dr. Jonathan Purnell, a professor at Oregon Health & Science University's Knight Cardiovascular Institute, said while the research doesn't prove "sugar can cause you to die of a heart attack", it adds to a growing body of circumstantial evidence suggesting that limiting sugar intake can lead to healthier, longer lives.

gee then where do you think lies the salvation

exercise

and avoiding eating meat?

Balanced diet & exercise, indulgences in moderation.  Not eating vegetables is more harmful than eating vegetables and drinking a coke.  Inclusion of good stuff is more important than total exclusion of bad stuff.

Basically the mom diet.  Eat and drink what your mother would approve of.

I often consider vegetarianism just because I like animals.  Best I've managed so far is to eat more fish.  :-\

Salmon is my go-to.  Instead of just pan frying last time I part cooked, layer separated, and placed the  pieces in a mild swiss cheese cream sauce and baked it quick in vol-au-vent, garnished with chives from the garden.  It came out really good although I probably won't bother with the partial pre-cooking next time and will just bake as needed.  Had the leftovers over scrambled eggs.  Btw, I'm the asshole who wants to search through ALL the cuts to find the most marbled pieces.  Definitely worth it, especially for a pan fry or bbq.

I like swordfish a lot too.  They say you shouldn't eat it too often since it's prone to collect heavy metals as a predator fish, but give it a shot if you've never tried it.  Classic lemon-herb butter pan cooked or teriyaki marinated BBQ'd and you'll be hooked.  As with salmon, don't overcook.  And as with a beef rib roast cut, the outer rings of the steak are where the superior flavors are, so the more off center the cut the better IME.  The core/inner rings will go pithy if overdone so that's the part to test for done while cooking.

Outed.

No secret around here I like a bit of hot kitchen action, chips/tea/chips.

I live on some pretty spartan fare when busy but cooking & baking are great fun, especially the eating part.  A lot of guys let themselves down dietwise because they can't cook for shit.  This stigma[ta] must end!!!!

Programme on channel 4 Dispatches 2 weeks ago about sugar, and how doctors who are government advisers for a group called The Carbohydrate Group, are also being paid by different food manufacturers like Pepsi,to push a high sugar diet as being healthy. All the time obesity levels and diabetes levels are climbing.I`m also reading a book by Dr Perlmutter called Grain Brain about how wheat and sugar is causing a rise in diabetes and alzeheimers, and how we need to go back to a high fat,low carb diet, and since i`ve gone back to the "old school" way of eating i`ve found myself dropping weight and i don`t get the sugar shakes anymore.I feel 100% better.

Exactly, you have doctors giving out advice as to what is healthy for you, being paid by the sugar industry to push that line, then when more people get diabetes the pharma industry steps in.

I can't remember who said it, but the best common-sense advice I heard about food and drink is?

If it didn't exist two hundred years ago, don't eat or drink it.
