It really brings us to the question about rest and recovery. Is R&R overstated?

no imo its essential.

the more i train, the more my body demands downtime. naps for an hour when i can on my lazy days, and a solid 7 hrs a night at least.

your body will let you know when it need sleep. if your dragging your ass around all day, and feel like you need a nap and you can have one take one.

i have always believed you repair when you sleep, based on my own experiences. i have trained body parts earlier in the day, gone to bed with them feeling 'numb' and woke up feeling normal. to me this means im repairing at night while i sleep.

bodybuilding is more about listening to your body and giving it what it needs, than it is about anyhting mechanical ie sets, reps frequency etc

To echo the sentiments of the 2 fine gentlemen who posted above me, YOU DON`T GROW IN THE GYM......get in,train hard, get out, eat,REST,repeat.

One fact overlooked is the timeline for protein synthesis. Have a read of Hypertrophy Specific Training forum and you will see that most protein synthesis in muscles ends within 48 hours. They believe in retraining every 48 hours. I used my response to pinch grip training as a guide to optimum growth. What I found was that my strength increased best if I trained every 3rd day. Not 2nd or 4th. During 30 days of training arms and calves every 3rd day I made rapid gains in both size and strength. Over 1 inch on arms and calves. In the pinch grip I set a world record of 92.5 kg for one hand.

That's just one guy. It's always interesting to see different theories. And to be perfectly honest, even as a reasonably intelligent guy, I'm starting to lose a bit of heart when reading about training theories for naturals. There's literally 100s out there and very rarely have they worked for me when I incorporated them. The only theory that ever worked for me and worked well and in the shortest amount of time, is to train for DOMS and keep the muscle sore.

How it works in the philosophy of science is to try to refute a theory to suggest it is false. So, train only arms and get both bis and tris sore and retrain them for a couple of weeks every third day. As long as you are putting on bodyweight during this time you should grow. If you don't then there is something wrong with the DOMS theory. Remember you have to do multiple sets with the same reasonably heavy resistance for between 10 and 20 reps. Sure, you could use less reps but it is easier to get a pump with higher reps. Plus, it is safer on the connective tissue. Think about it, when was the last time you got your biceps sore from training? Well, if you could and also did the same for triceps then rapid hypertrophy.
