how to look dry for a contest?
« on: May 07, 2014, 09:33:47 AM »
In many training vids on MD and Youtube, Pros look dry and hard 1-2 weeks out (for instance, Aaron Clark and Steve Kuclo) and seem to maintain this condition until the last couple of days before the show. Then, they either get in really good shape and win or fuck up and don't place.

my question is, how to look dry for a contest? is it mainly gear or just diet?

You may need to look up "dry and hard" in the bodybuilding dictionary if you think Kuclo falls in that category

The goal is to lose all fat, then fill out and pull water out. The problem is it becomes harder to pull water when you are loading as the added glycogen and fat stores hold on to water more so then just eating a few normal meals. Another problem is your body has been dry for so long that it releases hormones causing you to hold unto water

So basically pulling water too early or loading to heavy and not pulling out enough water due to the amount you loaded on.

1 week out you should be drinking enormous amounts of water, in fact you should not be bone dry before you start loading, draw out water after you start your loading phase not before.

Do you think drying out while loading hinders the assimilation of the carbs etc Most do both processes together...

Yeah I agree. I also find winny during prep works good and of course diuretic.

Yes the process should be done together always. I think if you do not have water in when you start loading it will be harder to load. Some people start as early as Tuesday, so Monday you should drink as much as possible or if you start loading Wednesday then Tuesday drink as much as possible.

Once the loading starts then cut down your drinking and finally the last 24 just small sips.

People are scared to drink the week of but you have nothing to worry about if you have no sodium in you and if you are on compounds that dry you.

As a man of science, I'm having trouble with understanding how you can minimise sub-q water and maximise water in the muscles.
If you're pulling water out of the body then how does it only come from under the skin? How do you take in enough water to carb load (impossible without 3g of water / 1g of carbs) while simultaneously pulling it out from under the skin? The laws of equilibrium and osmosis seem to disagree with this. Does drugs change it somehow?

This is why diuretics are a crapshoot.  They don't discriminate, water is pulled from subq, and the muscles.  This is why you see guys look great the week before the show, then flat and smooth on contest day.

Estrogen and sodium are the 2 main factors in water being present in the skin. Most drop any compounds that involve estrogen and use compounds that dry you up, whatever it takes and hope it is enough to come in bone dry. Upon loading your muscles will draw water into the muscle and hopefully it stays there  :-\
