Dana White too successful of a gambler for the Palms, ordered to cut back his play

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/dana-white-too-successful-of-a-gambler-for-the-palms--told-to-cut-back-his-play-210509747.html

Apparently, the Palms Resort & Casino will welcome gamblers with open arms if they lose regularly. The more they lose, the more enthusiastic the welcome.

But when a gambler is as successful as UFC president Dana White has apparently been recently, things aren't so welcoming. White told Norm Clarke, the Las Vegas Review-Journal's gossip columnist, that he won nearly $2 million gambling at the Palms since March. And, as a result he said, the Palms has dramatically cut the amount of White's action it will take.

According to Clarke, the Palms didn't give White the boot fully, but they cut his playing privileges from $25,000 per hand to $5,000. As a result, White has opted not to gamble at the Palms any more.

This is the second time in two years that White's success at the tables has led the Palms to boot him. The first time, it not only cost the resort the opportunity to host UFC fight cards, but many of its employees turned against it.

White is a legendarily generous tipper, and Clarke reported about rumors that White tipped dealers $200,000 during his management-ended three-month winning streak. Clarke reported that White will continue to dine at the Palms' trendy N9ne Steakhouse, where he has been known to tip staff $10,000 on a $10,000 tab.

He said Mandalay Bay has reached out to him and wants him as a customer, but White said there are few places in Las Vegas willing to take serious action any more.

Casinos don't want to gamble anymore. They're all owned by hedge funds and corporations. They want to stack the odds so much against you that you won't play. Realistically, there's only one place to play left in town. That's Caesars. They will let you play what you want to play. No messing around with limits.

White denied he has a gambling problem and told Clarke his gambling hasn't had an impact upon either his personal or professional life.

I was at N9ne a few years back having dinner and drinks with some friends. We figured maybe we would just buy a bottle of Grey Goose (not my choice) since we were drinking so much. They said it was $254.00. I laughed at the nasty bartender, gave her $1000 and said keep it.  ::)

Lol exactly. Dealer has the edge, there's no such thing as being "good" at gambling, except poker, if you consider that gambling. He could have a good run, but it's always ev+ for the casino to keep him playing. Trust me I'm a degenerate gambling analist.  ;D

I was thinking the same thing. I'm a former casino worker, both security and blackjack dealing.  If he won a large amount they would want to keep him so he would lose it back.

OK, after a few text it appears there maybe a measure of truth to the original article.

Seems that Dana White is a pretty skilled card counter. From what I gather he only plays blackjack. He does not bet sports and certainly does not bet UFC.

Now when casinos know or suspect you are counting cards they have several tactics they can employ to slow you down or stop your play entirely.

- They can change table limits and make the minimum bet the same as the maximum bet. In other words they make you bet the same amount every hand. This negates any advantage the player would have when the count is favorable.

- They can reshuffle the cards before the "cut card" is reached. This does not allow the player to get a true count and greatly reduces and card counter's advantage.

- If the casino truly fears your blackjack skills they simply "back you off."  Here is the speech you hear from the pit boss; "I'm sorry Mr. Wishbone, your blackjack is a little to strong for us. You are welcome to play any of the other games here in the casino, but I'm afraid we can not deal blackjack to you any more this evening."  Yes, I have been given that speech before. It's very real and not too uncommon when you are winning and they known you are counting.

-Reducing White's limit from $50,000 to $5,000 per hand would slow down his potential win rate but his counting skills would still be useful. He would theoretically just restructure his betting size and continue to count.

- His credit line is really not an issue because he is not asking for true credit. He simply signs makers for the amount of his buy in. He can place $5,000,000 on account if he wants at the casino and then just access his own money or he could simply buy in with cash.

Inside the Palms Casino is a High Limit area called "The Mint." That is where he plays. I have watched many celebrities and just rich motherrfuckers play extremely high limit blackjack in that room. Big big action and very exciting.
