I mean , you don't have to like Bodybuilding, but having the most important contest in BB for 50 years straight is a big deal .


I think if you had a line up with Bodybuilders from the 80's, you'd probably have Frank Zane on the tonight show speaking eloquently about the event, Mike Mentzer on Letterman another well spoken dude, Boyer, Haney,Dickerson,Paris Tom Platz with Mario lopez telling him to flex their legs and inviting people to the 50yh  Mr.O ...

And the rest of the gang flexing shirtless Columbu,Padilla, etc...


Seems like today's Bodybuilders all they care is to wear a hoodie, walk with a gallon of water,seat or lay flat on the floor at the hotel, and complain on instagram of low calorie intake etc.

The main reason is hysteria about steroids. Fuck that. I often hear journalists say people want sport clean. If that meant +10s 100m, smaller linebackers and wrestlers that looked like normal people noone would watch. It was better when the unwashed masses were ignorant.

When people saw arnold in 70s they thought they saw the product of hard work, dedication and diet. Nowadays anyone with muscle is dismissed as a product of steroids.

It is a mixture of a multitude of factors. It was on mainstream TV when the fitness craze took over and people were naive (moreso) re steroid use. It was aspirational AND they had physiques that looked desirable -  think cory everson v iris kyle or lenda murray for one thing. Think Labrada versus Pakulski. Granted most people thought both were "gross" or "freaks" but you could appreciate Labrada, Pakulski?

Other thing is that muscular physiques have become so mainstream that there is no wow factor in a bodybuilding contest anymore for huge aesthetic physiques. Watch any TV programme long enough and you will see someone who could have been on a 70s-90s bbing stage. Take The Big Bang Theory - a programme about physicists and you see from early on Penny's old boyfriend, who just happened to be huge, looked like this:




In 70s that would be exceptional, now it is an extra as a stereotype of a big guy. Why watch bodybuilding as a casual observer if huge ripped guys are everywhere on TV?

Lastly is steroids. And the rest. People are aware that drugs are needed to look or perform a certain way. These people question every fast time in a race, every long throw, every strong lift and every muscular person. They are brainwashed to thinking that steroids etc are bad and any product of their usage is tainted. Sadly there is little consistency as they associate drugs with muscles and cycling.  They will defend Bolt or some freak American Footballer while mocking a bodybuilder or cyclist as all drugs.

Compared to modern NFL players , IFBB pros are choir boys  
Love him or hate him, Arnold and Pumping Iron "made" the golden era of the 1970's and early 80's.

I hear your concern and most sports yearn for athletes from former eras.
I was amazed to see how popular the senior tennis legends tour matches were.

Ali vs Frazier was epic and boxing hasn't had the same appeal or fan hype since .

In my humble opinion, thanks to the internet and mass media we fans know "too much" about pro athletes.
As fans we know too many details and this detracts from the mystique and hype.

This current pack of IFBB Olympians are damn good bodybuilders.
We just don't have a charismatic ARNOLD or larger then life persona of  big Ronnie to help sell it.
