I don't care that supplements don't really work
« on: September 14, 2014, 05:23:12 PM »
Some work ok but most are garbage and I don't really care. What they do provide us is money for the industry, shows, expos, magazines and other fitness/bodybuilding related pursuits.

Also they provide hope. The 20 yo kid who is stacking his whey protein and creatine in his quest to get big, is not just buying the supplement but a dream.  When you view it like this and not just supplement effectiveness then it is not all that expensive.

Do I make any sense or am I way off?  And in before "yeah people wasting tons of money on supps that don't work  ::) "

When I sold bb supps I kept it to whey creatine fish oils and fat burners. I never lied. I said protein powder was just convenient creo was water retention and worked for some and fat burners were stimulants and appetite suppressants. I went from 5 to 500 customers in a year. I can't sell shit I wouldn't take or lie.

I find creatine and protein powders to be effective if your expectations are realistic, and also very convenient.

You sound like a woman who is clinging on to yen hope that it's the last time her boyfriend will give her a black eye and he may change one day.

Not really, and it's not convenient or as cost effective.

yes but the "industry" sucks right now.  It would help if it wasn't built on a foundation of horseshit.

A lot of supplements work :

creatine mono
omega 3
caffeine
vitamin D3
glucosamine

just that hormones are much more efficient

Creatine is probably one of the only supplements, if not the only one, to have been studied in major universities (Harvard, Columbia, UCLA, Berkeley, Cornell, and most other universities/colleges). Overall, the data has been mixed, with some studies showing creatine to be effective in improving athletic performance, while other studies show the opposite. Either way, if I was going to buy one supplement, and one supplement only, Id buy creatine. At least it has some validity behind its claims. Better than shitty muscle-tech products.

A statement from the Mayo Clinic:

Several high-quality studies have shown an increase in muscle mass with creatine use. However, some weaker studies have reported mixed results. Overall, the available evidence suggests that creatine does increase lean body mass, strength, and total work. Future studies should include the effect of individual differences such as fitness levels, sex, and age.

I think if you think it's working it's going to work. does that make sense? if you feel good abt taking something, you feel good abt yourself, so you train harder diet harder look better.

I'm not going to say it's placebo- I used to wholesale supps so I know a bit abt the industry- I think there are very beneficial supps for a natty trainer. but the key word is supplemental. and that what I feel they do- they create an environment for growth based on your expectations that you actually manifest thru your own efforts.

I add cappuccino flavoured protein powder to my oatmeal because it adds flavour and contains caffeine. That's about it.

most kids who just joined a gym and dont know better are lured into buying supps by cynical assholes this is sad. Hopefully one day they join an honest internet messageboard and are enlightned about the truth but still too many fall into the trap.

placebo effect

well documented

works for most medicines and supplements

pity we cant harness that effect
