Are there any taller posters here with smaller calves, or at least higher inserts? Seems like its more common than not, at least in my family since all the men are tall, but maybe its just bad genetics or something. Theres a few asian guys I notice at my gym that are pretty short but their legs are just big overall. Wouldn't trade those features though lol

It's genetics.   I have naturally muscular calves, and I recall always having them, but they really grew even more muscular when I took up cycling many years ago.   I dont even train calves in the summer months, as cycling keeps them nice and huge. For me, my strongest bodyparts have always been the ones which pump up easily.  Shoulders, Legs, Calves, Pecs have always been easy for me to grow, cause they pump quickly without a lot of effort.  biceps and triceps and back, are difficult for me to get a good pump, and have been bodyparts I have had to work at quite a bit to get them balanced.  I'm convinced the muscles where you get the best bloodflow and pump, are the one's that become your strengths.

So many good sprinters have little calves that have a lot of power.

 Riding a bike is great for leg development. Sure the elite bikers of the distance bike racing have lean legs. Many of them ride 100-200 miles a day. Bike sprinters have legs that rival many bodybuilders. I think bodybuilders who ride a couple of times a week are surprised how good it is for leg development.  Mentzer and Platz both rode bikes for cardio at some point in their career.

I did notice this. Asians in general have incredible leg genetics it seems. More often than not I'll see a serious asian lifter with huge calves and very big quads, but upper body always lags. And usually they're not even that strong in the legs. I remember squatting beside this asian guy (who was squatting in the rack beside me) who had gigantic legs and I was out-repping him with the same weight (and my legs SUCK, I mean no response to training whatsoever it seems).

However environmental manipulation would require larger amounts of walking around, carrying and constructing. Wider hips, larger calves facilitate more efficient walking and lifting, as do shorter limbs.
Shorter limbs also aid in enhanced heat retention in colder climates.
