Photos from my archives.
« on: February 13, 2015, 09:36:11 PM »
I enjoy photography and part of the digital process is editing photos. We all appreciate the photoshops of Ironmeister and others who manage to ridicule all and sundry by putting people into scenes that are amusing.

I prefer to put bodybuilders into beach scenes where they look much better than standing on a stage posing.

Taking a photo of someone and putting them on a beach and making it look realistic is not so easy. You have to add a drop shadow and make sure everything is neat and finished.

Here is my first effort at a coloured scene. Finally got a scanner that can do my negatives.

The beach here is One Mile Beach at Forster about 3 hours north of Sydney. I took the photo a few years ago.

Photo of me from 1975 taken by me in my gym at 9:30 pm after the gym closed. I had a posing light set up.

I didn't increase the size of any of the muscles here via Photoshop. One week out from the IFBB Mr Australia where I placed last in my class.

Here is one I haven't seen in a while. I used to love this mirror in a mate's apartment. I practiced going up on one toe then pulling on the ball of the foot so that

I could bring out both sides of the calf. Taken in the mid sixties when my calves were about 16 1/2 ". No steroids at all then.

Anyone remember Western Gym on Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver, BC.? I used to train there in the mid sixties. A primitive gym in a dark basement of a "Sports" Club.

My mate Big Jim Forsythe took the photo.

I loved hanging out at English Bay Beach and Sunset Beach in Vancouver. I would go there even when it wasn't sunny. The summers were cool and short and I always

dreamed of the South Pacific, or California. Sydney is a good compromise.

Photo taken around 1968 or 69 at Sunset Beach.

Here is Big Jim Forsythe who beat me in the arm wrestling at the Mr Canada contest in 1970. Jim was the manager of Western Gym for a while.

One day he sold this young fellow a membership. He even asked the guy to take out his wallet to check how much he had. So the guy wrote him

a cheque for a membership. Then Jim surprised me. He asked me to look after the gym so he could run out and deposit the cheque so the guy

couldn't change his mind! Funny guy, that Jim.

Jim is about 6 feet and weighed about 240 pounds in the photo. Taken in mid sixties.

By hooch, I presume you mean booze? Yes, Jim liked the ladies. I have a few stories there, too!

Rare photos. Arnold gave a seminar at my gym in 1974.

Larry Scott gave the best seminar of all the champs. Others include Ray Mentzer, Arnold, Franco, Roy Callendar, Serge Nubret, Lee Priest, and Lance Dreher.

Next best were Ray Mentzer and Lee Priest. Franco's was the worst.

People showed up from all over Sydney to hear Larry.

Physique-wise and mechanical ability-wise, you completely own and dominate Goodrum.  I can't believe that guy has any support on this forum, it's like everyone here is blind.

Ray Mentzer gave an excellent seminar. The next day he held a training camp that went for half a day. Very good to get personal hands on advice from Ray.

He stayed at my place with his partner Kathy for many months. That was back in 1987-8. He went back to California a single man.

Sergio came to Sydney twice that I know of. 1972 and 1982. In 72 he went up to Queensland to do a show so 82 was the first time

people in Sydney got to see Sergio pose. We had seen Arnold several times but Sergio was something else!

He trained at my gym a bit and we had a party for him at my place. Amazing how many Sydney bodybuilders showed up to meet

Sergio.

I joked with Sergio who I liked a lot. The guy had integrity. Of course, he didn't like me around yapping when it was time to train. He would sip his

coffee while Arleen waited for him in the foyer of the gym. I told her the marriage wouldn't last. Chalk and cheese.

I removed Roz from the second photo because I don't put her photo on the net.

We used to have pinch grip contests. You can see the apparatus on the wooden block. Because it was difficult to see if the weight had cleared the floor I decided to build

a special pinch grip machine that didn't need any judges. A pin fell when lifted 20mm. My best is 92.5 Kg or about 203 pounds with my right hand. I claim this as a world record because

no one has lifted more with one hand. We used the machine one year for the Australian Grip championships and I lifted 80 Kg but it still wasn't accepted as a record. Some lame

excuse that it was the only such machine in the world!

Here is Joe after winning the contest one year. He was famous for having huge calves as well.
