There was a guy here a couple years ago that poured gasoline all over himself and set himself ablaze on the beach.  People knocked him down and threw sand on him to put it out.  But he had major 3rd degree burns over 90% of his body.  When he arrived here at the ER, you could smell the stench as soon as the ambulance doors opened in the drive up.  (They brought him in through the back but you could smell it.  And it is HORRIBLE)

I can't imagine the emotional pain of wanting to kill yourself for whatever reason and failing (and thus having to continue the existence that tormented you so) combined with the physical pain from the burns that were probably bad enough to make you want to kill yourself all over again.

He was kept alive by machines for a long time.  The docs said that when he flicked the lighter and the gasoline erupted, it was so swift that it drew all the air out of his lungs and collapsed them.  Eventually he left.  I always wondered if he made another attempt on his life.  If it was bad before, I can't imagine how he viewed it with hideous scars all over now.

No.  Which is also puzzling why he did it in public.  Where people were bound to react.  And on a beach where there is sand/water on hand to put it out.  They say suicide is a cry for attention, but I could think of better ways to get attention than this.  Streak naked along the beach or something.

Obviously the biggest mistake he made was not doing it at home or somewhere isolated where no one could save him.
